Democratic Coalition (Spain)
Democratic Coalition ( es, Coalición Democrática, CD) was a Spanish electoral coalition formed in December 1978 to contest the general election the following year, after the approval of the Constitution. History In the first weeks, the coalition -after its foundation on 16 December 1978- adopted the names Spanish Democratic Confederation ( es, Confederación Democrática Española) or Progressive Democratic Confederation ( es, Confederación Demócrata Progresista) before changing its name to Democratic Coalition on 9 January 1979. Alfonso Osorio and José María de Areilza had been ministers in the UCD governments, who resigned from them at different times because of disagreements with President Adolfo Suárez. The presidential candidate of the government was Manuel Fraga. It won nine seats in the Congress of Deputies, nearly half of its predecessor, People's Alliance, had obtained in the 1977 elections. Manuel Fraga
Manuel Fraga Iribarne (; 23 November 1922 – 15 January 2012) was a Spanish professor and politician in Francoist Spain, who was also the founder of the People's Party. Fraga was Minister of Information and Tourism between 1962 and 1969, Ambassador to the United Kingdom between 1973 and 1975, Minister of the Interior in 1975, Second Deputy Prime Minister between 1975 and 1976, President of the People's Alliance/People's Party between 1979 and 1990 and President of the Regional Government of Galicia between 1990 and 2005. He was also a Member of the Congress of Deputies and a Senator. Fraga's career as one of the key political figures in Spain straddles both General Francisco Franco's regime and the subsequent transition to representative democracy. José María De Areilza, Count Of Motrico
Don José María de Areilza y Martínez-Rodas, Count of Motrico (3 August 1909, in Portugalete, Vizcaya – 22 February 1998, in Madrid) was a Spanish politician, engineer and ambassador. During the Spanish civil war he became Mayor of the city of Bilbao in 1938. Between 1947 and 1964 he served as Spanish Ambassador to Buenos Aires, Washington DC and Paris. In 1964 he resigned from his office and was asked by the King in exile to lead the monarchist opposition to general Franco, as Secretary General of his Private Council. Between 1975 and 1976 he was the first Foreign Affairs Minister of the new King Juan Carlos I. In 1976, along with Pío Cabanillas he founded the short-lived People's Party, which later became part of the UCD, although he left after disagreements with Adolfo Suárez.
