DeWitt Clinton High School
DeWitt Clinton High School is a public high school located since 1929 in the Bronx borough of New York City. Opened in 1897 in Lower Manhattan as an all-boys school, it maintained that status for 86 years before becoming co-ed in 1983. From its original building on West 13th Street in Manhattan, it moved in 1906 to a new location at 59th Street and Tenth Avenue (now Haaren Hall at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice). In 1929, the school moved to its present home on Mosholu Parkway in the Bronx, which more recently has been across from the renowned Bronx High School of Science. After more than a century of operation, DeWitt Clinton High School in the early 2000s has faced serious problems involving student performance, gang culture, and security. Mosholu Parkway
Mosholu Parkway is a parkway in the borough of the Bronx in New York City. The roadway extends between the New York Botanical Garden (where its southeast end meets the Bronx River Parkway) and Van Cortlandt Park (where its northwest end meets the Henry Hudson Parkway). The New York City Department of Transportation is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the roadway while the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation is responsible for the surrounding rights-of-way. Bedford Park, Bronx
Bedford Park is a residential neighborhood in the northwest Bronx, New York City, adjacent to the New York Botanical Garden. Its boundaries, starting from the north and moving clockwise, are: Mosholu Parkway to the north, Webster Avenue to the east, East 196th Street to the south, and Jerome Avenue to the west. Haaren High School
Haaren High School was a public high school in the Midtown Manhattan area of New York City in New York, United States. It was located at 899 Tenth Avenue, between 58th Street and 59th Street, in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. The building was designed by Charles B. J. Snyder and was originally constructed in 1903 to house DeWitt Clinton High School. When that school relocated to the Bronx in 1929, the building became home to Haaren High School until it closed in the late 1970s. Named for educator John Henry Haaren, the school was noted for its vocational program, including classes focusing on internal combustion engines. After developers announced plans to renovate the building to create offices, production studios and retail stores, John Jay College purchased the structure in 1988 and remodeled it to house offices, a library, classrooms and other facilities. DeWitt Clinton Park
DeWitt Clinton Park is a New York City public park in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, between West 52nd and 54th Streets, and Eleventh and Twelfth Avenues. The park, which was one of the first New York City parks in Manhattan on the working waterfront of the Hudson River, is named for DeWitt Clinton, who had created a business boom of Hudson commerce when he opened the Erie Canal.
