Dinkytown
Dinkytown is a commercial district within the Marcy-Holmes, Minneapolis, Marcy-Holmes neighborhood in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Centered at 14th Avenue Southeast and 4th Street Southeast, the district contains several city blocks occupied by various small businesses, restaurants, bars, and apartment buildings that house mostly University of Minnesota students. Dinkytown is along the North side of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities East Bank campus. Marcy-Holmes, Minneapolis
Marcy-Holmes is a neighborhood in the University community of Minneapolis. The majority of the area is residential and sits upon a bluff overlooking the river and the city skyline. A small section of the neighborhood along the river is an industrial zone. The neighborhood is bordered on the south by the Mississippi River, to the east by the University of Minnesota and 15th Avenue Southeast, to the north by the railroad tracks that separate it from Como Neighborhood, and to the west by Central Avenue. Although somewhat confusing to newcomers, the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood is considered part of Southeast Minneapolis, despite its seemingly centralized location within the city today. Marshall-University High School
Marshall-University High School was a public junior high and high school serving grades 6–12 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The school was founded in 1968 through a merger between John Marshall High School (a Minneapolis public school) and University High School (a laboratory school at the University of Minnesota) in an attempt to diversify the student body. Minneapolis Public Schools closed Central, West and Marshall-University high schools in 1982. The Marshall-University building was later used by the Dinkytown Technical Center. In 2013, the building was razed and The Marshall, a luxury corporate-owned apartment building named after the former school, was built on the site. Al's Breakfast
Al's Breakfast is reportedly the narrowest restaurant in the city of Minneapolis, at a width of . Al's Breakfast is crammed into a former alleyway between two much larger buildings and is located in the city's Dinkytown neighborhood near the University of Minnesota. The restaurant's 14 stools have seated generations of local students, along with notable figures such as writer James Lileks and humorist Garrison Keillor, all of whom consider the tiny diner to be a significant icon of the state. Student Quarters
A student quarter or a student ghetto is a residential area, usually in proximity to a college or university, that houses mostly students. Due to the youth and relative low income of the students, most of the housing is rented, with some cooperatives. Landlords have little incentive to properly maintain the housing stock, since they know that they can always find tenants. Non-students tend to leave the area because of the noise and raucous behavior of the students. Property crimes, sexual assaults, and noise and drug violations are more common in student quarters. Most modern student ghettos arose from the rise in post-secondary enrollment after World War II. Many colleges and universities became unable to house all their students, while homeowners in adjacent neighborhoods fled from the influx of students. Robin Wonsley (born 1991) is an American activist and politician who has been a member of the Minneapolis City Council from the 2nd Ward since 2021. Early life and education Wonsley was born in Chicago in 1991 and grew up on the South Side.
