The Department of Examinations is a non-ministerial government department of Sri Lanka and the national examination service. It comes within the purview of the Ministry of Education (Sri Lanka), Ministry of Education. The department is responsible for carrying out public examinations such as the General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (SL) and Advanced Level (SL), Advanced Level and other state sector examinations. It also carries out other examinations. The head of the department is Commissioner General Of Examinations. Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners of Examination form the assisting body to the Commissioner General. The Ministry of Education (; ) is a ministry of the Government of Sri Lanka that directs the formulation and implementation of policies related to primary, secondary, and tertiary education in Sri Lanka. Currently, Sri Lanka allocates less than 2% of its GDP on education, which falls well below the international benchmark of 4-6%, making it one of lowest in the region, UNICEF emphasised until 2025. In the 2025 Budget, Sri Lanka has made a historic investment in education, allocating substantial funds to enhance various aspects of the sector. Ordinary Level (SL)
The Sri Lankan Ordinary Level (O-level) formerly called Senior School Certificate (SSC), is a General Certificate of Education (GCE) qualification in Sri Lanka, conducted by the Department of Examinations of the Ministry of Education. It is based on the Cambridge University Ordinary Level qualification. An O-level is a qualification of its own right, but more often taken in prerequisite for the more in-depth and academically rigorous Advanced Level exams. It is usually taken by students during the final two years of Senior secondary school (Grade 10 & 11 (usually ages 15–16)) or external (non-school) candidate. The exam is usually held in December. The Sri Lankan Advanced Level (A-level), formerly known as the Higher School Certificate (HSC), is a General Certificate of Education (GCE) qualification exam in Education in Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka, similar to the United Kingdom, British Advanced Level (UK), Advanced Level. It is conducted annually by the Department of Examinations under the Ministry of Education (Sri Lanka), Ministry of Education.
