Decriminalizing Sex Work
The decriminalization of sex work is the removal of criminal penalties for sex work (specifically, prostitution). Sex work, the consensual provision of sexual services for money or goods, is criminalized in most countries. Decriminalization is distinct from legalization (also known as the "regulationist" approach). Advocates of decriminalization argue that removing the criminal sanctions surrounding sex work creates a safer environment for sex workers, and that it helps fight sex trafficking. Opponents of decriminalization argue that it will not prevent trafficking (or even increase trafficking) and could put sex workers at greater risk. The global pandemic of HIV/AIDS (human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) began in 1981, and is an ongoing worldwide public health issue. Nordic Model Approach To Prostitution
The Nordic Model approach to sex work, also known as the end demand, equality model, neo-abolitionism, Nordic and Swedish model, is an approach to prostitution that criminalises clients, third parties and many of the ways the sex trade operates. This approach to criminalising sex trafficking was developed in Sweden in 1999 on the debated radical feminist position that all sex work is exploitative and no person can willingly consent to sexual exploitation. The main objective of the model is to abolish the sex industry and the suffering it causes by punishing the purchase of sexual services and providing resources for the survivors of prostitution. The Prostitution Reform Act 2003 is an Act of Parliament that decriminalised prostitution in New Zealand. The Act also gave new rights to sex workers. It has attracted international attention, although its reception has been mixed. The Act repealed the Massage Parlours Act 1978 and the associated regulations. The Act was introduced as a member's bill by Tim Barnett after being drawn from a ballot.
