Craven County, North Carolina
Craven County is located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 census, the population was 100,720. Its county seat is New Bern, North Carolina, New Bern. The county was created in 1705 as Archdale Precinct from the now-extinct Bath County, North Carolina, Bath County. It was renamed Craven Precinct in 1712 and gained county status in 1739. It is named for William Craven, 1st Earl of Craven (1608–1697), William, Earl of Craven, who lived from 1606 to 1697. Craven County is part of the New Bern Metropolitan Statistical Area, New Bern, NC, Metropolitan Statistical Area. New Bern City Hall
City Hall, also known as the Municipal Building, is a historic municipal building in New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. It was originally built in 1897 by the federal government to house a post office, federal courthouse, and custom house. It is a 3 1/2-story, brick and granite building with a 2 1/2-story wing in the Romanesque Revival style. The building has hipped roofs with dormers. The Baxter Clock, a clock tower, is in the square outside. It became the municipal building in 1936. The ''North Carolina Gazette'' was the first newspaper published in North Carolina, then the Province of North Carolina. It originally published from 1751 and continued to be published for approximately eight years, during which time it was discontinued and started up again before and during the American Revolutionary War. Clubfoot is a birth defect where one or both feet are rotated inward and downward. Congenital clubfoot is the most common congenital malformation of the foot with an incidence of 1 per 1000 births. In approximately 50% of cases, clubfoot affects both feet, but it can present unilaterally causing one leg or foot to be shorter than the other. Most of the time, it is not associated with other problems. New Bern Battlefield Site
New Bern Battlefield Site is a historic site of the American Civil War Battle of New Bern located near New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. The battle was fought on 14 March 1862. The New Bern Battlefield Site consists of two discontiguous sites. The Site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. Croatan Game Land
The Croatan were a small Native American ethnic group living in the coastal areas of what is now North Carolina. They might have been a branch of the larger Roanoke people or allied with them. The Croatan lived in current Dare County, an area encompassing the Alligator River, Croatan Sound, Roanoke Island, Ocracoke Island, and parts of the Outer Banks, including Hatteras Island. The Croatan people who exist today live in Cumberland, Sampson, and Harnett counties predominantly. The chiefs, called werowances ("he who is rich"), controlled from 1 to 18 towns.
