''Covers'' is a compilation album by American alternative metal band Deftones. The album was released by Warner Bros. Records as a limited edition release for Record Store Day on April 16, 2011. It was distributed exclusively in a vinyl record format, limited to 5,000 copies. As the title suggests, ''Covers'' is a compilation of cover songs—many of which were previously released on '' B-Sides & Rarities'' (2005) and the digital version of ''Diamond Eyes'' (2010). Deftones record cover songs after each album recording session, and the songs on ''Covers'' span their entire career up to that point. The cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Simple Man" was recorded before the group's debut album ''Adrenaline'' (1995) when vocalist Chino Moreno was about 17 years old. In popular music, a cover version, cover song, remake, revival, or simply cover, is a new performance or recording by a musician other than the original performer or composer of the song. Originally, it referred to a version of a song released around the same time as the original in order to compete with it. Now, it refers to any subsequent version performed after the original. Drive Like Jehu
Drive Like Jehu was an American post-hardcore band from San Diego active from 1990 to 1995. It was formed by rhythm guitarist and vocalist Rick Froberg and lead guitarist John Reis, ex-members of Pitchfork, along with bassist Mike Kennedy and drummer Mark Trombino, both from Night Soil Man, after their two bands disbanded in 1990. Drive Like Jehu's music was characterized by passionate singing, unusual song structure, indirect melodic themes, intricate guitar playing, and calculated use of tension, resulting in a distinctive sound amongst other post-hardcore acts and helped to catalyze the evolution of hardcore punk into emo. After releasing their eponymous debut in 1991 through local record labels Cargo Music and Headhunter Records, Drive Like Jehu signed to major label Interscope Records along with Reis' other band Rocket from the Crypt. Duran Duran
Duran Duran () are an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1978 by singer and bassist Stephen Duffy, keyboardist Nick Rhodes and guitarist/bassist John Taylor. With the addition of drummer Roger Taylor the following year the band went through numerous personnel changes before May 1980, when they settled on their most famous line-up by adding guitarist Andy Taylor and lead vocalist Simon Le Bon. When Duran Duran emerged they were generally considered part of the New Romantic scene. Innovators of the music video, Duran Duran were catapulted into the mainstream with the introduction of the 24-hour music channel MTV. ''Rio'' is the second studio album by English new wave band Duran Duran, released on 10May 1982 through EMI Records. The band wrote and demoed most of the material before recording the album at AIR Studios in London from January to March 1982. Colin Thurston returned from their 1981 self-titled debut studio album as producer. The band utilised more experimentation compared to the debut, from vibraphone and marimba to the sound of a cigarette being lit and cracking ice cubes. Andy Hamilton played a saxophone solo on "Rio". A new wave album with musical elements ranging from dance to synth-pop, ''Rio'' is mostly composed of fast, upbeat numbers, along with a couple slower synthesiser-based ballads. Japan were an English new wave band formed in 1974 in Catford, South London by David Sylvian (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Steve Jansen (drums) and Mick Karn (bass guitar), joined by Richard Barbieri (keyboards) and Rob Dean (lead guitar) the following year. Initially a glam rock-inspired band, Japan developed their sound and androgynous look to incorporate electronic music and foreign influences. "Ghosts" is a song by English band Japan. It was released in edited form in March 1982 as the third single from their 1981 album '' Tin Drum''. It reached number 5 in the UK Singles Chart in April. Although "Ghosts" was their biggest hit, this was not enough to stop the band splitting eight months later. Journalist Todd Hutlock called it "one of the most remarkable and unlikely entries in British chart history." "Simple Man" is the last track on side one of Lynyrd Skynyrd's debut album, ''(Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd)''. The song is one of Lynyrd Skynyrd's most popular songs. Since the song became available for digital download, it has become Lynyrd Skynyrd's third best-selling digital song after " Sweet Home Alabama" and " Free Bird." It has sold 1,333,000 copies in the U.S. as of November 2013. The Cardigans is a Swedish rock band formed in Jönköping, Sweden, in 1992 by guitarist Peter Svensson, bassist Magnus Sveningsson, drummer Bengt Lagerberg, keyboardist Lars-Olof Johansson and lead singer Nina Persson. Jawbox
Jawbox is an American alternative rock band from Washington, D.C., formed in 1989 by J. Robbins (vocals/guitar), Kim Coletta (bass), and Adam Wade (drums). After the trio released the album '' Grippe'' in 1991, Bill Barbot (guitar/vocals) joined as the fourth member. Jawbox released their second album ''Novelty'' in 1992, followed by Wade being replaced by Zach Barocas that same year. Jawbox signed to the major label Atlantic Records and released their third album '' For Your Own Special Sweetheart'' in 1994, which spawned the band's most recognizable song "Savory". "Savory" (released as "Savory + 3") is the first single released by Jawbox from their 1994 major label debut, '' For Your Own Special Sweetheart''. The song is a description of the female body, according to AllMusic, but in a very cryptic form. The three other songs from the single were later included as bonus tracks for the 2009 reissue of ''For Your Own Special Sweetheart''. Music video The music video was released in early 1994 and gained some MTV airplay, particularly on programs like ''120 Minutes'', but the song never charted. The video depicts Jawbox performing at a little girl's birthday party, where the birthday girl receives an assortment of unusual gifts, including weapons and dentures.
