County Of East Frisia
The County of East-Frisia ( Frisian: Greefskip Eastfryslân; Dutch: Graafschap Oost-Friesland) was a county (though ruled by a prince after 1662) in the region of East Frisia in the northwest of the present-day German state of Lower Saxony. County Originally East Frisia was part of the larger Frisian realm. The Frisians had practically no higher authority above them. There did exist, though, respected families of chieftains (''Häuptling''), who aspired to increase their, mostly local, power and influence. In the 15th century, the Cirksena dynasty managed to establish its authority in practically all of East Frisia. In 1464, Ulrich I of East Frisia was raised to the status of Count by Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor, and East Frisia became a county. County Of Holland
The County of Holland was a State of the Holy Roman Empire and from 1433 part of the Burgundian Netherlands, from 1482 part of the Habsburg Netherlands and from 1581 onward the leading province of the Dutch Republic, of which it remained a part until the Batavian Revolution in 1795. The territory of the County of Holland corresponds roughly with the current provinces of North Holland and South Holland in the Netherlands. Etymology The oldest sources refer to the not clearly defined county as ''Frisia'', west of the Vlie (also known as West Frisia). Ocko I Tom Brok
Ocko I tom Brok (de Broke) (about 1345–1389) followed his father Keno I tom Brok as chieftain of the Brokmerland and the Auricherland in East Frisia, a former territory on Germany's North Sea coast. According to tradition, he lived in the 1370s in Italy and was knighted by Queen Joanna I of Naples for his military and court services. After the death of his father in 1376 Ocko returned to his homeland in 1378. After heavy fighting against Folkmar Allena, he initially united almost all of East Frisia under his rule. In 1389 he was murdered near the district of Aurich Castle. Ocko I tom Brok married Foelke Kampana of Hinte (known locally as ''Quade Foelke''). Harlingerland
The Harlingerland is a strip of land on the North Sea coast of East Frisia. While today the whole of the district of Wittmund is usually described as Harlingerland, historically it specifically refers to the northern part of the present district, which formed the old Frisian state of this name, in particular, the regions around Esens and Wittmund. The region around Friedeburg still belonged at that time to the Frisian state of Östringen. The local dialect for many folk in the Harlingerland is East Frisian Low Saxon (or East Frisian ''platt'') but with a Harlinger variation somewhat different from the rest of East Frisia. The old Frisian language continued to be spoken in the Harlingerland much longer than in most other East Frisian regions. Wittmund
Wittmund is a town and capital of the district of Wittmund, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Geography Wittmund is a town of 21,000 inhabitants located in Germany's historic coastal district of East Frisia, between the towns of Aurich and Jever. The town's borough covers an area of which make it one of the largest boroughs in Lower Saxony. While the town of Wittmund is about from the North Sea coast, its borough includes the little port of Harlesiel which is the starting point for ferries to the island of Wangerooge. Harlesiel is named after the Harle, a small river that starts and finishes within Wittmund borough. (A ''siel'' is a sluice in a dyke. At low tide, water from the river may flow into the sea.) Sibet Attena
Sibet Attena (also: la, Sibo; – 8 November 1473) was an East Frisian chieftain. He was a son of Sibet of Dornum (''"old Sibet"'') (d. 1433) and Frouwa of Manslagt, a daughter of Enno Cirksena. From his father he inherited the Beninga Castle in Dornum. From his first wife, Onna of Stedesdorf, a daughter of Hero Omken the Elder, he inherited Stedesdorf in 1447. As a nephew and a loyal supporter of Ulrich Cirksena, he was invested with Esens in 1454. He was also to inherit Manslagt via his mother, but he renounced this. Also in 1454, he supported Ulrich Cirksena against Tanne Kankena in Wittmund. He occupied Kankena's castle in Wittmund and expelled him. Seven years later he invested Kankena with Dornum. From 1455, he called himself "Chieftain at Esens, Stedesdorf and Wittmund". Thus, he viewed himself as the ruler of the Harlingerland. Friedeburg
Friedeburg is a municipality in the district of Wittmund, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 14 km southeast of Wittmund, and 20 km west of Wilhelmshaven. About 4 kilometers east of the main village of Friedeburg, near the small village named Etzel, one of Europe's largest salt domes is located. This geological feature is part of the 240 million years old Zechstein Group formations. The salt dome, with a volume of 46 million cubic metres, houses important natural gas storages and crude oil storages. Jever
Jever () is the capital of the district of Friesland in Lower Saxony, Germany. The name Jever is usually associated with a major brand of beer, Jever Pilsener, which is produced there. The city is also a popular holiday resort. Jever was granted city status in 1536. Unofficially Jever is sometimes referred to as ''Marienstadt'' (Maria city) in reference to Maria of Jever, the last independent ruler of the city. Theda Ukena
Theda Ukena (1432 in Oldersum – 16 November 1494 in Greetsiel) was from 1466 to about 1480 regent of the County of East Frisia. Theda was the granddaughter and heiress of the chief Focko Ukena (died 1436) and was born in 1432 in Oldersum as the daughter of Uko Fockena and Heba Attena of Dornum. She was probably named after her grandmother Theda of Reide, the first wife of Focko Ukena. Her father was assassinated in June 1432. In 1455 she was second wife of Ulrich I Cirksena, who had been Count of East Frisia since 1454. Between 1457 and 1465, they had six children: Heba, Gela, Enno I, Edzard I ''the Great'', Ucko and Almuth. Theda brought, among other claims, Oldersum into the marriage, which considerably weakened the ruling chief Wiard of Oldersum.
