Jyllands-Posten Muhammad Cartoons Controversy
The ''Jyllands-Posten'' Muhammad cartoons controversy (or Muhammad cartoons crisis, da, Muhammedkrisen) began after the Danish newspaper ''Jyllands-Posten'' published 12 editorial cartoons on 30 September 2005, most of which depicted Muhammad, a principal figure of the religion of Islam. The newspaper announced that this was an attempt to contribute to the debate about criticism of Islam and self-censorship. Islam in Denmark, Muslim groups in Denmark complained, and the issue eventually led to protests around the world, including violence and riots in some Muslim world, Muslim countries. Iran Newspaper Cockroach Cartoon Controversy
The Iran newspaper cockroach cartoon controversy occurred in response to a cartoon drawn by the cartoonist Mana Neyestani and published in the Iranian Friday-magazine ''Iran (newspaper), Iran-e-jomee'' on 12 May 2006. The cartoon describes nine methods of dealing with cockroaches by depicting a Persian-speaking child and a cockroach. During the first method, when the cockroach does not understand him, the child decides to talk to the cockroach in "cockroach language", but the cockroach does not even understand its "own" language and replies by saying "''Namana?''" ("''What?''" in Azerbaijani language) the cartoon has been interpreted by people as an insult to Iranian Azerbaijanis. Bill Leak
Desmond Robert "Bill" Leak (9 January 1956 – 10 March 2017) was an Australian editorial cartoonist, caricaturist and portraitist. Raised in Condobolin and Beacon Hill, Sydney, Leak attended Julian Ashton Art School during the 1970s. His cartoons were first published in 1983 in '' The Bulletin'' and after he drew for ''The Sydney Morning Herald'' until 1994, when he was recruited by News Limited to contribute to '' The Daily Telegraph-Mirror'' and later to ''The Australian''. West Papuan Refugee Crisis
In early 2006, a furore erupted in Indonesia over the Australian government's decision to grant temporary protection visas to 42 Indonesian asylum seekers from West Papua region. The controversy caused diplomatic tension as well as a "war of cartoons", with newspapers in Indonesia and Australia trading hits over a decision that the Indonesians say questions the sovereignty that they officially have over West Papua. The issue was caused by the Australian Government's decision through the immigration department to allow visas to 42 refugees that arrived in January. The Battle of Jenin took place in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank on April 1–11, 2002. Israel Defense Forces (IDF) entered the camp, and other areas under the administration of the Palestinian Authority, during the Second Intifada, as part of Operation Defensive Shield. The Jenin camp was targeted after Israel reported that it had "served as a launch site for numerous terrorist attacks against both Israeli civilians and Israeli towns and villages in the area."
