Out of the total 1,092 km2 of Hong Kong land, three-quarters is countryside, with various landscapes including beaches, woodlands, and mountain ranges being found within the small territory. Most of Hong Kong's parks have abundant natural diversity, usually containing over 1,000 species of plants. Country parks To conserve and, where appropriate, open up the countryside for the greater enjoyment of the population, the Country Parks Ordinance was enacted in 1976 to provide a legal framework for the designation, development, and management of Country Parks and Special Areas. It provides for establishing a Country and Marine Parks Board to advise the Director of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation, who, like the Country and Marine Parks Authority, is responsible for all matters on Country Parks and Special Areas. Woodland
A woodland () is, in the broad sense, land covered with trees, or in a narrow sense, synonymous with wood (or in the U.S., the '' plurale tantum'' woods), a low-density forest forming open habitats with plenty of sunlight and limited shade (see differences between British, American, and Australian English explained below). Woodlands may support an understory of shrubs and herbaceous plants including grasses. Woodland may form a transition to shrubland under drier conditions or during early stages of primary or secondary succession. Higher-density areas of trees with a largely closed canopy that provides extensive and nearly continuous shade are often referred to as forests. Extensive efforts by conservationist groups have been made to preserve woodlands from urbanization and agriculture. Tai Mo Shan Country Park
Tai Mo Shan is the highest peak in Hong Kong, with an elevation of . It is located at approximately the geographical centre of the New Territories. The Tai Mo Shan Country Park covers an area of around Tai Mo Shan. It is located to the north of Tai Lam Country Park. The Long Falls is the highest waterfall in Hong Kong. Robin's Nest (Hong Kong)
Robin's Nest ( (former name:)) is a hill located in northeastern Hong Kong, south of the border between Hong Kong and Shenzhen in the New Territories. Robin's Nest is the 55th tallest hill in Hong Kong. The name Hung Fa Leng () does not translate directly as 'Robin's Nest' but as 'Red Flower Ridge'. In 2017, the Hong Kong Government announced that it was planning to designate the area as a country park, called Robin's Nest Country Park. This proposed designation was made in June 2019. Lantau North Country Park () is one of two rural parks on Lantau Island, Hong Kong and is located on the north side of the island. The park was designated in 1978. History Lantau North Country Park was designated on 18 August 1978. An extension to the park, called Lantau North (Extension) Country Park, was conceived in 1993. Lung Fu Shan Country Park
Lung Fu Shan Country Park, established 18 December 1998, is a country park in the Central and Western District of Hong Kong. It covers the densely vegetated slopes of Lung Fu Shan (''aka.'' Hill Above Belcher's), and includes the disused Pinewood Battery as well as the Pinewood Garden picnic area, providing a scenic backdrop to the residential and commercial districts of Hong Kong Island. Shek O Country Park is a rural marine park located on Shek O, Southern District, Hong Kong and facing the South China Sea. The 701-hectare park opened on 21 September 1979. Plover Cove Country Park () is a country park in Hong Kong located in the Northeastern New Territories. The original country park was established on 7April 1978, covering of natural terrain in the administrative North District and Tai Po District. A northern extension to the park, Plover Cove (Extension) Country Park, was designated on 1June 1979, covering the Double Haven islets and Ping Chau. Ecology Wild animals residing in the woodlands include Malayan porcupine, Chinese ferret-badger, Chinese pangolin, leopard cat and Pallas's squirrel.
