Conrad Burns
Conrad Ray Burns (January 25, 1935 – April 28, 2016) was an American politician who served as a United States Senator from Montana and later was a lobbyist. He was only the second Republican popularly elected to represent Montana in the Senate and was the longest-serving Republican senator in Montana history. While in the Senate, Burns sat on the Senate Appropriations Committee and was the chairman of its Subcommittee on the Interior. He was also chairman of the Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee's Communications subcommittee. Early life Burns was born on a farm near Gallatin, Missouri, to Russell and Mary Frances (Knight) Burns. He graduated from Gallatin High School in 1952 and then enrolled in the College of Agriculture at the University of Missouri. He was also a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. ''Northern Broadcasting System'' was started in 1975 by Conrad Burns (who later became a United States Senator from Montana) as an agricultural broadcast network called the Northern Agricultural Network. Burns created the network after seeing an opportunity to provide information to the agri-business community, Montana's top industry. The network had four stations at its inception and grew in size. In 1986, Burns sold the network to enter Montana politics. Under the guidance of the network's new President/CEO Taylor Brown, the network grew to cover parts of eight states in the Northwestern United States and Canada. Northern Broadcasting is a blanket organization which includes the Northern News Network, the Northern Sports Network, and the Northern Ag Network. KULR-TV (channel 8) is a television station in Billings, Montana, United States, affiliated with NBC and owned by the Cowles Company. The station's studios are located on Overland Avenue in the Homestead Business Park section of Billings, and its transmitter is located on Coburn Hill southeast of downtown.
