Slavoljub "Slavko" Vorkapić ( sr-Cyrl, Славољуб "Славко" Воркапић; March 17, 1894 – October 20, 1976), known in English as Slavko Vorkapich, was a Serbian-born Hollywood montagist, an independent cinematic artist, chair of USC School of Cinematic Arts, chair of the Belgrade Film and Theatre Academy, painter, and illustrator. He was a prominent figure of modern cinematography and motion picture film art during the early and mid-20th century and was a cinema theorist and lecturer. Early life Slavoljub Vorkapić was born on March 17, 1894, in the small village of Dobrinci, near Ruma in the Srem region, at the time part of the Kingdom of Croatia and Slavonia, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Vojvodina, Serbia). John Hoffman (filmmaker)
John Hoffman (29 August 1904, Hungary – 6 January 1980, Altadena, California), was an American editor of montage sequences for several Hollywood studio features. He also directed a number of films, including ''The Wreck of the Hesperus'' and ''Strange Confession''. With his colleague, the Serbian montagist Slavko Vorkapich, Hoffman made two striking visual tone poems, '' Moods of the Sea'' (a.k.a. ''Fingal's Cave'', 1941) and ''Forest Murmurs'' (1947). The former film is set to Felix Mendelssohn's ''Hebrides Overture'' and was restored in 2004 by film preservation expert David Shepard. Pathé Exchange, commonly known as Pathé, was an American film production and distribution company, largely of Hollywood's silent era. Known for its groundbreaking newsreel and wide array of shorts, it grew out of the American division of the major French studio Pathé Frères, which began distributing films in the United States in 1904. Ten years later, it produced the enormously succeesful '' The Perils of Pauline'', a twenty-episode serial that came to define the genre. The American operation was incorporated as Pathé Exchange toward the end of 1914 and spun off as an independent entity in 1921; the Merrill Lynch investment firm acquired a controlling stake.
