Confederation Of Christian Trade Unions
The Confederation of Christian Trade Unions ( nl, Algemeen Christelijk Vakverbond, or ACV; french: Confédération des syndicats chrétiens, CSC) is the largest of Belgium's three trade union federations. History The federation was founded in 1904, but can trace its origins to the "Anti-Socialist Cotton Workers' Union" founded in 1886. The organisation took its current name in 1923. Today the ACV/CSC has 22 regional federation and 16 sectoral unions, with a membership of 1.7 million (almost 16% of the total Belgian population). The president is currently and the secretary general is Marie-Hélène Ska. Willy Peirens
Willy Peirens (born 19 August 1936) is a former Belgian trade union leader. Born in Deinze, Peirens was active in the Catholic Workers' Youth, becoming its national co-ordinator in 1959. In 1968, he transferred to become youth officer at the Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (ACV), then in the early 1970s became the co-ordinator of its regional structure. In 1977, he became secretary of the ACV's Flemish region, and in 1987, the ACV's national president. ''Het Volk'' ( en, The People) was a Belgian newspaper that focused on "news with a human undertone". History ''Het Volk'' was first published in 1891. It was the only paper controlled by the Christian labour organizations in Ghent. It opposed socialism. It adopted "anti-socialist daily" as its slogan. The paper was distributed in Ghent, Aalst and Brussels. In 1912, the slogan was changed to "Christian labourer's daily". In 1925, ''Het Volk'' was the first newspaper in Belgium to publish a small Sunday issue, "Het Zondagsblad" ("The Sunday Paper").
