It is one of the composer's most successful works. History Bach composed his Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, BWV 1043, around 1730, as part of a concert series he ran as the Director of the Collegium Musicum in Leipzig. Structure The concerto is characterized by a subtle yet expressive relationship between the violins throughout the work. Igor Gruppman
Igor Gruppman (born July 4, 1956) is a Ukrainian violinist and conductor. He is the Principal Conductor of the Orchestra at Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah, a position he has held since 2003. In May 2009, Igor Gruppman was appointed by Valery Gergiev to the position of music director of the newly formed Mariinsky Stradivary Orchestra. He currently also is Concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. Gruppman is a native of Kiev, Ukraine. He made his debut performance at the Kiev Philharmonic Hall in 1967. He is a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory where he studied under Leonid Kogan and Mstislav Rostropovich. Gruppman also studied with Jasha Heifetz at the USC School of Music in Los Angeles. Gruppman emigrated to the United States with his family in 1979. Robert Sutton Whitney (July 9, 1904 – November 22, 1986) was an American conductor and composer. He was a student of Leo Sowerby. Louisville Orchestra
The Louisville Orchestra is the primary orchestra in Louisville, Kentucky. It was founded in 1937 by Robert Whitney (1904–1986) and Charles Farnsley, Mayor of Louisville. The Louisville Orchestra employs salaried musicians, and offers a wide variety of concert series to the community, including classical programs featuring international guest artists, pops performances, and education and family concerts. In 1942 the orchestra adopted the name of the former Louisville Philharmonic Society (founded in 1866), which it kept until 1977 before reverting to its original name. The orchestra is the resident performing group for the Louisville Ballet and the Kentucky Opera, and presents several concerts across the Kentucky/Indiana area. Paul Kling
Paul Kling (28 March 19292 January 2005) was a Czech-born Canadian violinist and Holocaust survivor. Early life Kling was born in Opava on 28 March 1929. He was a gifted musician very early in life, and by age seven he had performed Mozart's A Major Violin Concerto and Bach's A Minor Violin Concerto with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. In 1941, several months before the thirteen-year-old Kling was to receive the equivalent of a bachelor's degree in musical theory, he was expelled from school for being an 'undesirable element' and associated with the Jewish community. Life in the camps On 28 September 1944, Kling was transported to Auschwitz concentration camp, but survived. He was sent to Theresienstadt concentration camp at the age of 14, where he was chosen to perform in Viktor Ullmann's opera ''The Emperor of Atlantis, or The Disobedience of Death''.
