Company E Of The 167th Infantry Of The Alabama National Guard Armory
The Company E of the 167th Infantry of the Alabama National Guard Armory is a historic building in Guntersville, Alabama. The armory was built in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration. It was one of 36 buildings constructed by the WPA for the Alabama National Guard, however its hilltop location, rough limestone block construction, and two towers flanking the main entry give it a castellated style, rather than the Streamline Moderne style of the other state armories. In 1978, the company was dissolved, and the armory was used as a fire station until 1998. In 2006 it was renovated into the Guntersville Museum, and sits as the centerpiece of a public park, which includes a library and community theater. 167th Infantry Regiment (United States)
The 167th Infantry Regiment (nicknamed "4th Alabama") is an infantry regiment of the United States Army National Guard. The unit traces its history back to the Seminole Wars. The 167th Infantry Regiment's history lives on in the 1st Battalion, 167th Infantry, "4th Alabama", part of the Alabama National Guard. Origins The 167th Infantry Regiment was formed in 1836. They fought in the Civil War at Seven Pines, Second Manassas, Antietam, Gettysburg and The Wilderness as the 4th Alabama (symbolized in the 13 blue stars on the coat of arms). The regiment fought for the Confederacy as part of the Alabama Brigade. In 1916, they skirmished with Pancho Villa's bandits along the Mexican border during the Pancho Villa Expedition. Guntersville (previously known as Gunter's Ferry and later Gunter's Landing) is a city and the county seat of Marshall County, Alabama, United States. At the 2020 census, the population of the city was 8,553. Guntersville is located in a HUBZone as identified by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). History Guntersville was founded by John Gunter (1765–1835), the great-grandfather of American humorist Will Rogers. The Works Progress Administration (WPA; renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration) was an American New Deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers (mostly men who were not formally educated) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. It was set up on May 6, 1935, by presidential order, as a key part of the Second New Deal. The Alabama National Guard is the National Guard of the U.S State of Alabama, and consists of the Alabama Army National Guard and the Alabama Air National Guard. (The Alabama State Defense Force is the third military unit of the Alabama Military Department, part of the Government of Alabama, however not a component of the National Guard). The National Guard is charged with dual federal and state missions.
