The Cobbold family is a prominent family that flourished in Ipswich since the eighteenth century. They first became prominent for their involvement in the brewing industry, but subsequently became involved in other areas of trade, banking politics and the arts. They have also been prominent promoters of Ipswich Town Football Club. Brewing
Brewing is the production of beer by steeping a starch source (commonly cereal grains, the most popular of which is barley) in water and fermenting the resulting sweet liquid with yeast. It may be done in a brewery by a commercial brewer, at home by a homebrewer, or communally. Ipswich Town Football Club
Ipswich Town Football Club is a professional association football club based in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. They play in League One, the third tier of the English football league system. The club was founded in 1878 but did not turn professional until 1936; it was subsequently elected to join the Football League in 1938. Ipswich won the English league title in 1961–62, their first season in the top flight, and finished runners-up in 1980–81 and 1981–82. They finished in the top six in the English First Division for ten years, with the exception of when they won the FA Cup in 1977–78. Ipswich were a regular competitor in European football and won the UEFA Cup in 1980–81. John Cobbold (1797–1882)
John Chevallier Cobbold (24 August 1797 – 6 October 1882) was a British brewer, railway developer and Conservative Party politician. Background Cobbold was the son of John Wilkinson Cobbold and Harriet, daughter of Temple Chevallier (a priest). Until his father's death in 1860 he lived at Cobbold Lodge in Felixstowe. Business career Cobbold was a member of an established brewing family who had been brewing beer in Ipswich since 1746. He was one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the Eastern Union Railway (EUR) which saw Ipswich connected to Colchester (and thus London) by rail in 1846 and the Ipswich and Bury Railway which saw the railway open to Bury St Edmunds in 1847. The two railways merged and a line to Norwich was opened in 1849. John Cobbold (1831–1875)
John Patteson Cobbold (12 July 1831 – 10 December 1875) was a Conservative Party politician in England. The scion of a long-established prominent family in Ipswich, Suffolk, Cobbold was elected at the general election in February 1874 as one of the two Members of Parliament (MPs) for the borough of Ipswich, winning a seat held from 1847 to 1868 by his father John Cobbold (1797–1882). However, the younger Cobbold did not repeat his father's long service, dying office in December 1875, aged 44. At the resulting by-election, his younger brother Thomas Cobbold held the seat for the Conservatives. Zainab Cobbold
Zainab Cobbold (born Lady Evelyn Murray; 17 July 1867 – January 1963) was a Scottish diarist, traveller and noblewoman who was known for her conversion to Islam in the Victorian era. John Cobbold (businessman)
John Cavendish Cobbold (30 June 1927 – 13 September 1983) nicknamed "Johnny," was an English businessman and a grandson of Victor Cavendish, 9th Duke of Devonshire. He chaired Ipswich Town F.C. from 1957 to 1976. Early life Cobbold and his brother Patrick (1934–1994) both went to Wellesley House and on to Eton College. Johnny was just 17 and Patrick 10 when their father was killed in 1944. Johnny saw service in Palestine with the Welsh Guards and Patrick did National Service and signed on for an extra 2 years with his father’s Scots Guards. He was accidentally shot in the leg by one of his soldiers during training but went on to be Aide-de-camp to the Governor of The Bahamas. Patrick Cobbold
Patrick Mark Cobbold (20 June 1934 – 16 December 1994) was an English businessman and a grandson of Victor Cavendish, 9th Duke of Devonshire. He was educated with his elder brother John at Wellesley House and Eton College. Baron Cobbold
Baron Cobbold, of Knebworth in the County of Hertford, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1960 for the banker Cameron Cobbold. He was Governor of the Bank of England from 1949 to 1961. The 2nd Baron succeeded in 1987. In 1961, he assumed by deed poll the additional surname of Lytton, which was the maiden name of his mother Lady Hermione Lytton, through whom the family inherited Knebworth House. From 2000 he was one of the ninety elected hereditary peers who remained in the House of Lords after the passing of the House of Lords Act 1999, and sat as a cross-bencher until his retirement in 2014.
