''Cipher Bureau'' is a 1938 American film directed by Charles Lamont. The film was successful enough to elicit a sequel, ''Panama Patrol''. Plot Philip Waring, the head of a listening agency in Washington D.C., is dedicated to breaking up a foreign radio-spy ring. He enlists his naval-officer brother and tangles with beautiful spies. Charles Lamont
Charles Lamont (May 5, 1895 – September 11, 1993) was a prolific filmmaker, directing over 200 titles and producing and writing many others. He directed several Abbott and Costello comedies and many Ma and Pa Kettle films. Biography A California native, Lamont was born in San Francisco. Lamont came from a family of actors, being the fourth generation to be an actor. He appeared onstage while a teenager and started appearing in films from 1919. He worked as a prop man before becoming assistant director. Lamont started directing comedy shorts in 1922, including for Mack Sennett and Al Christie. Some of Lamont's earliest directorial jobs were silent short-subject comedies for Educational Pictures. Robert Frazer (born Robert William Browne, June 29, 1891August 17, 1944) was an American actor who appeared in some 224 shorts and films from the 1910s until his death. He began in films with the Eclair company which released through Universal Pictures. Early years Frazer was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and educated in Massachusetts. Lemuel Hooper Atchley (April 30, 1887 – November 17, 1943) was an American film actor. Atchley was the son of Mr. and Mrs. P. S. Atchley. He was a 1908 graduate of the Knoxville, Tennessee, school system. Atchley's first professional acting occurred with a stock theater company in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He appeared in 214 films between 1929 and 1944 and is known for his appearance as the inconsiderate father in the ''Our Gang'' film ''Birthday Blues'' (1932). Atchley's Broadway credits included ''Jarnegan'' (1928), ''Across the Street'' (1924), and ''Marie Dressler's "All Star Gambol"'' (1913). Sidney L. Miller (born Sid Miller; October 22, 1916 – January 10, 2004) was an American actor, director and songwriter. Biography Sidney Miller was born in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania. His first acting role was in the movie '' Penrod and Sam'' (1931), although uncredited. In 1937, he made his radio debut on the ''Jack Benny Program'' episode "Christmas Shopping", as a man whom Benny mistakes for a department store floorwalker.
