Cinema Of North Korea
The cinema of North Korea began with the division of Korea and has been sustained since then by the ruling Kim family (North Korea), Kim dynasty. Kim Il Sung and his successor Kim Jong Il were both cinephiles and sought to produce propaganda films based on the ''Juche'' ideology. All film production is supervised by the Workers' Party of Korea and generally concerns propaganda. North Korea has nevertheless produced some non-propaganda films for export to the wider world. The North Korean film industry is sometimes referred to as "Chollywood", a portmanteau of "Qianlima, chollima" and "Cinema of the United States, Hollywood". Animation is a filmmaking technique whereby still images are manipulated to create moving images. In traditional animation, images are drawn or painted by hand on transparent celluloid sheets to be photographed and exhibited on film. Animation has been recognised as an artistic medium, specifically within the entertainment industry. The film portrays the liberation of Korea from Japanese colonial rule in 1945. The Pyongyang International Film Festival is a biennial cultural exhibition held in Pyongyang, North Korea. Until 2002, the film festival was reserved to "non-aligned and other developing countries". ''Empress Chung'' () is a 2005 animated feature film, produced in North and South Korea and directed by Nelson Shin, on whose story the screenplay is also based. Synopsis In this adventure, based on a famous Korean folk tale, a daughter sacrifices herself to restore her blind father's eyesight. Production As a personal project, Shin spent eight years getting the project off the ground, including three and a half years of pre-production. The film was co-produced in North Korea by the Chosun April 26th Children Film Studio (also known as SEK), and the score was also recorded in the North by the Pyongyang Film and Broadcasting Orchestra.
