Church Of St. John The Evangelist (Montreal)
St. John the Evangelist is a parish of the Anglican Diocese of Montreal in the Anglican Church of Canada in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, founded by Father Edmund Wood in 1861; its church is well known in Montreal as the "Red Roof Church", which was also the headquarters of St. Michael's Mission until 2022. Its orientation is Anglo-Catholic, and it is the only Anglican locale in Montreal to practise this tradition, known as High Church. Solemn High Mass is celebrated on Sundays and feast days and Solemn Evensong and Benediction several Sundays a year. Mass is said daily, in French on Tuesdays. The parish of Saint-Benoît-de-Nursie, a French-language congregation of the Orthodox Church in America, worships in the Chapel of Our Lady of Walsingham in the church's crypt. Ontario Street (officially in french: rue Ontario) is an east-west artery in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It crosses the boroughs of Ville-Marie and Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. In the latter borough, the street becomes a mix of residential and commercial and is known as ''Promenade Ontario''. History John S. Cartwright, a banker from Kingston, Ontario, and J. B. Forsyth, a local merchant, purchased and subdivided the farm of Sir John Johnson in the northern part of ''Faubourg Quebec''. They gave the three new streets the names of three different Great Lakes: Erie, Huron, and Ontario. Ontario Street was later extended in stages toward both the east and the west. Until 1948, it was believed that the street was named after the Province of Ontario, but the discovery of the subdivision documents by a city of Montreal historian corrected that inaccuracy. Frederick George Scott
Frederick George Scott (7 April 1861 – 19 January 1944) was for the first part of his life an Anglican priest and a Canadian poet to whom the Canadian literary establishment gave the epithet "Poet of the Laurentians." He was associated with Canada's Confederation Poets, and wrote 13 books of Christian and patriotic poetry, often using the natural world to convey deeper spiritual meaning. He is better known for the latter part of his life. In his fifties, Scott became a chaplain in the Canadian Expeditionary Force sent to France during the First World War. Despite his insistence on remaining close to the front line to give assistance to the wounded, he survived many close calls until he was seriously wounded only weeks before the Armistice. He was subsequently decorated for bravery under fire. His memoir, ''The Great War As I Saw It'', was favourably received by both critics and the Canadian public. William Osler
Sir William Osler, 1st Baronet, (; July 12, 1849 – December 29, 1919) was a Canadian physician and one of the "Big Four" founding professors of Johns Hopkins Hospital. Osler created the first residency program for specialty training of physicians, and he was the first to bring medical students out of the lecture hall for bedside clinical training. He has frequently been described as the ''Father of Modern Medicine'' and one of the "greatest diagnosticians ever to wield a stethoscope". Osler was a person of many interests, who in addition to being a physician, was a bibliophile, historian, author, and renowned practical joker. John Hamilton (Quebec Politician)
John Hamilton (16 December 1827 – 3 April 1888) was one of the founding members of the Senate of Canada. He was born in Hawkesbury in Upper Canada in 1827, the son of George Hamilton. John and his brothers continued to expand their father's lumber business from its base on the lower Ottawa River. He served as reeve of Hawkesbury from 1858 to 1864. In 1860, he was elected to the Legislative Council of the Province of Canada for the Inkerman division in Canada East. A Conservative, he was appointed to the senate on 23 October 1867 by royal proclamation following the Canadian Confederation of 1867. He served in that capacity, representing the province of Quebec until his resignation on 1 May 1887. He died at Montreal in 1888. William Heward Grafftey, (August 5, 1928 – February 11, 2010) was a Canadian politician and businessman. Early life Born in Montreal, Quebec, to a wealthy family, he was a nephew of artist Prudence Heward of the Beaver Hall Group, and wrote a chapter on her in the 1996 book '' Portraits of a Life''. His father, Major Arthur Grafftey, was a First World War hero and board chairman of the Montreal Lumber Company. Brooke Claxton
Brian Brooke Claxton (23 August 1898 – 13 June 1960) was a Canadian veteran of World War I, federal Minister of National Health and Welfare and Minister of National Defence. Early life He was born in Montreal and received his early education at Lower Canada College. He was a gifted student and entered McGill University in September 1915 after completing grade 11. While at McGill he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Society. After a year at university he left McGill in 1916 and enlisted with the Victoria Rifles of Canada.
