Chief Of The Defence Staff (Nigeria)
The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) is the professional head of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the most senior uniformed military adviser to the minister of defence and the president of Nigeria. The chief of the defence staff is based at the Ministry of Defence and works alongside the Permanent Secretary of Defence, the ministry's senior civil servant. The Chief of Defence is the highest ranking officer to currently serve in the armed forces. It is occupied by the most senior commissioned officer appointed by the President of Nigeria. The position was established for the first time under Nigeria's 1979 constitution. The current chief of the defence staff is General Lucky Irabor, who succeeded General Abayomi Olonisakin in January 2021. Paul Dike (born 1950) is a retired air chief marshal of the Nigerian Air Force, who was the Chief of the Air Staff from 2006 to 2008. In August 2008, he was appointed Chief of the Defence Staff. Prior to his appointment as Chief of the Air Staff, Dike was Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command. Al-Amin Musa Daggash (born 1 October 1942) is a retired Air Marshal of the Nigerian Air Force who served as the 7th Chief of the Nigerian Defence Staff from 1998 to 1999 under the General Abdulsalami Abubakar regime. He was the first non-army officer to hold that position in Nigeria's history, before him, this position was exclusively occupied by army officers. Abdulsalami Abubakar (; born 13 June 1942) is a Nigerian statesman and retired Nigerian Army general who served as the ''de facto'' President of Nigeria from 1998 to 1999.
