Central (Cardiff Electoral Ward)
Central was the name of an original electoral ward in the centre of the county borough and, from 1905, city of Cardiff, Wales. It elected representatives to the Cardiff County Borough Council and, from 1974, South Glamorgan County Council. The ward ceased to exist in 1996. Description and background In July 1890, following the creation of Cardiff County Borough Council, Central was a new electoral ward created, one of the ten in the county borough. The ward was bordered to the west by the River Taff, to the east by the Taff Vale Railway and to the south by the Great Western Railway line. The Riverside ward lay on the other side of the River Taff, the Cathays ward to the northeast (of the Taff Vale Railway) and the South ward lay to the south. Electoral Ward
A ward is a local authority area, typically used for electoral purposes. In some countries, wards are usually named after neighbourhoods, thoroughfares, parishes, landmarks, geographical features and in some cases historical figures connected to the area (e.g. William Morris Ward in the London Borough of Waltham Forest, England). It is common in the United States for wards to simply be numbered. South (Cardiff Electoral Ward)
South was the name of an original electoral ward in the south of the town and (from 1905) city of Cardiff, Wales. It elected representatives to Cardiff Town Council, Cardiff County Borough Council and the post-1974 Cardiff City Council. The ward ceased to exist in 1983. Description and background A "South" ward was created (one of four) in Cardiff at the end of the eighteenth century, to elect constables for the town. Two wards, "North" and "South", elected councillors to the first Cardiff Borough Council, on 31 December 1835. (the wards would have related to the town's two parishes, of St John's and St Mary's). Community (Wales)
A community ( cy, cymuned) is a division of land in Wales that forms the lowest tier of local government in Wales. Welsh communities are analogous to civil parishes in England. There are 878 communities in Wales. History Until 1974 Wales was divided into civil parishes. These were abolished by section 20 (6) of the Local Government Act 1972, and replaced by communities by section 27 of the same Act. The principal areas of Wales are divided entirely into communities. Unlike in England, where unparished areas exist, no part of Wales is outside a community, even in urban areas. Castle, Cardiff
Castle ( cy, Castell) is a community in the centre of Cardiff, Wales. It includes Cardiff city centre (and Cardiff Castle) as well as the civic buildings of Cathays Park, bordered by the River Taff to the west, the railway to the south and east, Corbett Road to the north. There is no community council for the area. For elections to Cardiff City Council, Castle is part of the Cathays electoral ward. Cardiff City Council
Cardiff City Council was the local government district authority that administered the city of Cardiff, capital of Wales, from 1974 until 1996. The district council replaced the pre-1974 county borough council. It was succeeded in 1996 by Cardiff Council. Bypass (road)
A bypass is a road or highway that avoids or "bypasses" a built-up area, town, or village, to let through traffic flow without interference from local traffic, to reduce congestion in the built-up area, and to improve road safety. A bypass specifically designated for trucks may be called a truck route. If there are no strong land use controls, buildings are often built in town along a bypass, converting it into an ordinary town road, and the bypass may eventually become as congested as the local streets it was intended to avoid. Petrol stations, shopping centres and some other businesses are often built there for ease of access, while homes are often avoided for noise and pollution reasons. The 1970 Cardiff City Council election was held on Thursday 7 May 1970 to elect councillors to Cardiff City Council in Cardiff, Glamorgan, Wales. It took place on the same day as many other local elections in Wales and England. The previous elections to this one were in May 1969 and the next elections would be in May 1971. These would be some of the last all-Cardiff elections before the dissolution of the unitary authority and the creation of the new second-tier district authority of Cardiff City Council in 1974.
