Caribbean Cup
The Caribbean Cup was the championship tournament for national association football teams that are members of the Caribbean Football Union. The first competition, established by Shell and run by former England Cricket fast bowler Fred Rumsey, was contested in 1989 in Barbados. The Caribbean Cup served as a qualification tournament among CFU members for the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The Caribbean Cup replaced the CFU Championship competition which was active between 1978 and 1988. Trinidad and Tobago, eight-time winners, and Jamaica, six-time winners, were the most successful sides, winning a combined 14 of 18 titles. Martinique, Haiti, Cuba and Curaçao also won the tournament. In 1990 on the day of the final, an insurrection in Trinidad and Tobago, the host nation, by the Jamaat al Muslimeen forced an abandonment of the tournament with only the final and 3rd place play-off game remaining. 2017 Caribbean Cup
The 2017 Caribbean Cup was the 19th and final edition of the Caribbean Cup, the biennial international men's association football, football championship of the Caribbean region organized by the Caribbean Football Union (CFU). The top four teams qualified for the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup, while the 2017 Caribbean Cup qualification#Fifth place playoff, fifth-placed team advanced to a 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup qualification (CFU–UNCAF play-off), play-off against the fifth-placed team from the 2017 Copa Centroamericana for the final Gold Cup berth. The host for the final round was expected to be announced in January 2016. Martinique was announced as host on 25 January 2017, winning over bids of Curaçao and French Guiana. The draw for the semi-finals was also conducted on the same day at the CFU office in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda, St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda. The CONCACAF Nations League ( es, Liga de Naciones CONCACAF, french: Ligue des Nations de la CONCACAF) is an international association football competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the member associations of CONCACAF, the regional governing body of North America. The tournament takes place on dates allocated for international friendlies on the FIFA International Match Calendar. Jamaat Al Muslimeen Coup Attempt
The Jamaat al Muslimeen coup attempt was an attempt to overthrow the government of Trinidad and Tobago, instigated on Friday, 27 July 1990. Over the course of six days, Jamaat al Muslimeen, a radical extremist Islamist group, held hostages (including Prime Minister A. N. R. Robinson and other government officials) at the Red House and at the headquarters of the state-owned national television broadcaster, Trinidad and Tobago Television (TTT). On 1 August, the insurgents surrendered. They were charged with treason, but were ordered released by the Court of Appeal. Twenty four people were killed and many more were injured in the coup. The 1990 Caribbean Cup (known as the Shell Caribbean Cup for sponsorship reasons) was the second edition of the Caribbean Cup, the football championship of the Caribbean, one of the CONCACAF zones. The final stage was hosted by Trinidad and Tobago. The tournament was not completed. Play was suspended when Jamaat al Muslimeen attempted a ''coup d'état'' of the government of Trinidad and Tobago. The tournament was abandoned altogether after Tropical storm Arthur forced the cancellation of the final round of games. Trinidad and Tobago were to meet Martinique in the final, and Jamaica and Barbados were to meet in the third place match. The 1989 Caribbean Cup (known as the Shell Caribbean Cup for sponsorship reasons) was the first edition of the Caribbean Cup, the football championship of the Caribbean, one of the CONCACAF zones. The final stage was hosted by Barbados. The tournament was sponsored by Shell Company Ltd. after the tournament was first thought of by employees of Shell Antilles and Gulanas Ltd. Barbados received a bye to the final round as they were hosts of the competition and Shell (based in Barbados) felt that it was better suited to host the tournament as Barbados have an international airport. The 1996 Caribbean Cup (also known as the Shell/Umbro Caribbean Cup for sponsorship reasons), was the 8th edition of the Caribbean Cup, the biennial football championship of the Caribbean region (CFU). It was held in Trinidad, where it began on 24 May 1996 and concluded on 7 June. In the tournament, the hosts Trinidad and Tobago were to be joined by 7 nations who advanced from the qualification process that began in April 1996 and involved 18 Caribbean national teams.
