Cardiff Council Elections
Cardiff Council elections take place for the whole council every five years, to Cardiff Council (officially the County Council of the City and County of Cardiff) in south Wales. It came into being as a unitary authority on 1 April 1996, after the passing of the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994. In 2014 the National Assembly for Wales deferred all local elections in Wales to 2017. The council is composed of 75 councillors. Between 1974 and 1996 Cardiff Council was a district council of South Glamorgan (the city also electing councillors to the county council). Prior to 1974 Cardiff Council governed a county borough, separate from the county of Glamorgan. Cardiff Council
Cardiff Council, formally the County Council of the City and County of Cardiff ( cy, Cyngor Sir Dinas a Sir Caerdydd) is the governing body for Cardiff, one of the Principal Areas of Wales. The principal area and its council were established in 1996 to replace the previous Cardiff City Council which had been a lower-tier authority within South Glamorgan. Cardiff Council consists of 79 councillors, representing 28 electoral wards. Labour has held a majority of the seats on the council since 2012. The last election was in May 2022 and the next election is due in 2027. Kevin Brennan (politician)
Kevin Denis Brennan (born 16 October 1959) is a Welsh Labour politician serving as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Cardiff West since 2001. He served as a Minister of State at both the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Department for Children, Schools and Families from 2009 to 2010. Brennan held several junior ministerial offices from 2006 to 2009 at the Treasury, Cabinet Office and Department for Children, Schools and Families. Canton (Cardiff Electoral Ward)
Canton is the name of an electoral ward in the west of the city of Cardiff, Wales, which covers part of its namesake community, Canton. The ward elects three county councillors to the County Council of the City and County of Cardiff. Description and history As far back as the late 19th-century Canton was a ward to Cardiff Town Council., and has served as a ward through various local government reorganisations and boundary changes. The current Canton ward is bordered to the north by the Pencisely Road, to the west by the River Ely and stretching as far south as Leckwith and the Cardiff City Stadium. Jennifer Elizabeth Randerson, Baroness Randerson (born 26 May 1948) is a Welsh Liberal Democrat member of the House of Lords. She is former junior minister in the Wales Office serving in the Cameron–Clegg coalition. Cyncoed
Cyncoed ( ); is an affluent and exclusive community in the northeast of Cardiff, the capital of Wales. With many properties in the area fetching over £1 million, Cyncoed is considered to have some of the highest property prices in the country. Cyncoed overlooks the city centre of Cardiff, near Roath Park, with views of the surrounding mountains. Background and development In 1887 John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute offered of marshland to Cardiff Council, for use as a public park. In 1894, Roath Park was officially opened to the public. Work initially focused on creating the lake from an area of marshland. In 1915 a lighthouse was constructed in the lake containing a scale model of the ' Terra Nova' ship to commemorate Captain Scott's ill-fated voyage to the Antarctic from Cardiff in 1910. Rhiwbina (electoral Ward)
Rhiwbina is the name of an electoral ward in the north of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. It covers the community of the same name. Background Rhiwbina became a ward to Cardiff City Council in 1967, after it was transferred from the Cardiff Rural District. Cardiff North (UK Parliament Constituency)
Cardiff North () is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2017 by Anna McMorrin of the Labour Party. The seat has been relative to others a marginal seat since 2001 as well as a swing seat as its winner's majority has not exceeded 8% of the vote since the 14.3% majority won in that year. The seat has changed political allegiance twice since that year. Julie Morgan
Julie Morgan (née Edwards; 2 November 1944) is a Welsh Labour Party politician, who has been a Member of the Senedd for Cardiff North seat in the Senedd since the 2011 election. She was previously Member of Parliament (MP) for Cardiff North from 1997 until 2010. She was married to former First Minister of Wales Rhodri Morgan until his death in 2017. Plasnewydd
Plasnewydd (meaning ''New Manor'' or ''New Place'' in English) is an electoral ward (and formerly the name of a community) of Cardiff, Wales. It falls within the parliamentary constituency of Cardiff Central. It is bounded by the electoral wards of Cyncoed ( Roath Park) to the north; Penylan to the northeast; Adamsdown (main Newport Road) to the southwest; and Cathays (Cardiff to Caerphilly railway) to the west. It covers what is now the community of Roath. The ward population taken at the 2011 census was 18,166. History Plasnewydd takes its name from a 17th century house called "The New Place", originally a home of Edwards Richard and, in 1890, given to the local people. Fairwater is the name of an electoral ward in the west of Cardiff, capital city of Wales. It covers Fairwater and Pentrebane on the outskirts of the urban area. The Fairwater ward is bordered to the west by Pentyrch and St Fagans, to the east by Llandaff and to the south by the Ely ward.
