Carcinogenic Parasite
Carcinogenic parasites are parasitic organisms that depend on other organisms (called hosts) for their survival, and cause cancer in such hosts. Three species of flukes (trematodes) are medically-proven carcinogenic parasites, namely the urinary blood fluke (''Schistosoma haematobium''), the Southeast Asian liver fluke (''Opisthorchis viverrini'') and the Chinese liver fluke (''Clonorchis sinensis''). ''S. haematobium'' is prevalent in Africa and the Middle East, and is the leading cause of bladder cancer (only next to tobacco smoking). ''O. viverrini'' and ''C. sinensis'' are both found in eastern and southeastern Asia, and are responsible for cholangiocarcinoma (cancer of the bile ducts). The International Agency for Research on Cancer declared them in 2009 as a Group 1 biological carcinogens in humans. Other parasites are also linked to various cancers. Parasitism is a close relationship between species, where one organism, the parasite, lives on or inside another organism, the host, causing it some harm, and is adapted structurally to this way of life. The entomologist E. O. Wilson has characterised parasites as "predators that eat prey in units of less than one". Parasites include single-celled protozoans such as the agents of malaria, sleeping sickness, and amoebic dysentery; animals such as hookworms, lice, mosquitoes, and vampire bats; fungi such as honey fungus and the agents of ringworm; and plants such as mistletoe, dodder, and the broomrapes. Strongyloides Stercoralis
''Strongyloides stercoralis'' is a human pathogenic parasitism, parasitic nematode, roundworm causing the disease strongyloidiasis. Its common name in the US is threadworm. In the UK and Australia, however, the term ''threadworm'' can also refer to nematodes of the genus ''Enterobius'', otherwise known as Pinworm (parasite), pinworms. The ''Strongyloides stercoralis'' nematode can parasitize humans. The adult parasitic stage lives in tunnels in the mucosa of the small intestine. The genus ''Strongyloides'' contains 53 species, and ''S. stercoralis'' is the type species. ''S. stercoralis'' has been reported in other mammals, including cats and dogs. However, it seems that the species in dogs is typically not ''S. stercoralis'', but the related species ''S. canis''. Hematuria or haematuria is defined as the presence of blood or red blood cells in the urine. “Gross hematuria” occurs when urine appears red, brown, or tea-colored due to the presence of blood. Hematuria may also be subtle and only detectable with a microscope or laboratory test. Blood that enters and mixes with the urine can come from any location within the urinary system, including the kidney, ureter, urinary bladder, urethra, and in men, the prostate. Schistosomiasis
Schistosomiasis, also known as snail fever, bilharzia, and Katayama fever, is a disease caused by parasitic flatworms called schistosomes. The urinary tract or the intestines may be infected. Symptoms include abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloody stool, or blood in the urine. Trematoda is a class of flatworms known as flukes. They are obligate internal parasites with a complex life cycle requiring at least two hosts. The intermediate host, in which asexual reproduction occurs, is usually a snail. The definitive host, where the flukes sexually reproduce, is a vertebrate. ''Dis'' – double, ''Genos'' – race) is a class of trematodes in the Platyhelminthes phylum, consisting of parasitic flatworms (known as ''flukes'') with a syncytial tegument and, usually, two suckers, one ventral and one oral. Reginald Harrison FRCS (24 August 1837 – 28 February 1908) was a British surgeon, sometime vice-president and Member of the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons and Consulting Surgeon to St Peter's Hospital. Robert Thomson Leiper (17 April 1881 – 21 May 1969) FRS CMG was a British parasitologist and helminthologist. Early life and education Leiper was born on 17 April 1881 in Witch Road, Kilmarnock, Scotland; the eldest of three children of John Leiper (died 1895), tailor, and his wife, Jessie Aird.
