Peter Canisius
Peter Canisius ( nl, Pieter Kanis; 8 May 1521 – 21 December 1597) was a Dutch Jesuit Catholic priest. He became known for his strong support for the Catholic faith during the Protestant Reformation in Germany, Austria, Bohemia, Moravia, Switzerland and the British Isles. The restoration of the Catholic Church in Germany after the Protestant Reformation is largely attributed to the work there of the Society of Jesus, which he led. He is venerated in the Catholic Church as a saint and as a Doctor of the Church. Life He was born in 1521 in Nijmegen in the Duchy of Guelders, which, until 1549, was part of the Habsburg Netherlands within the Holy Roman Empire and is now the Netherlands. His father was a wealthy burgermeister, Jacob Kanis. His mother, Ægidia van Houweningen, died shortly after Peter's birth. Theodorich Canisius
Theodorich Canisius (1532 in Nijmegen – September 27, 1606 in Ingolstadt) was a Jesuit academic. Biography Canisius was a half-brother of St. Peter Canisius. After winning, at the age of twenty-two, the highest academic distinction at Louvain, he decided to follow his stepbrother and enter the Society of Jesus, and was sent to St. Ignatius of Loyola in Rome, who received him into the Society. Henricus Canisius
Henricus Canisius (1562, Nijmegen - 2 September 1610, Ingolstadt) was a Dutch canonist and historian. Biography Canisius was born Hendrik de Hondt ("The Dog", Latinized to ''Canisius'') and belonged to the same distinguished family as Saint Peter Canisius, who was his uncle. He studied at the University of Leuven, and in 1590 was appointed professor of canon law at Ingolstadt. Aegidius Of Viterbo
Giles Antonini, O.E.S.A., commonly referred to as Giles of Viterbo ( la, Ægidius Viterbensis, it, Egidio da Viterbo), was a 16th-century Italian Augustinian friar, bishop of Viterbo and cardinal, a reforming theologian, orator, humanist and poet. He was born in Viterbo and died in Rome. Life He was born to humble parents and his given name is not known; his father was Lorenzo Antonini, of Canepina, near Viterbo, and his mother, Maria del Testa. He entered the Order of St. Augustine in June 1488 at which time he was given the name Giles. After a course of studies at priories of the Order in Ameria, Padua, Istria, Florence and Rome, where he studied philosophy. He was later made a doctor of theology. Canisius Golden Griffins
The Canisius College Golden Griffins are composed of 16 teams representing Canisius College in intercollegiate athletics. These teams include men's and women's basketball, cross country, track, lacrosse, soccer, and swimming and diving. Men's sports include baseball, ice hockey, and golf. Women's sports include volleyball, soccer, and softball. The Golden Griffins compete in the NCAA Division I and are members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) for most sports, excluding men's ice hockey which competes in Atlantic Hockey. Canisius High School is a Catholic, private college-preparatory school for young men run by the USA Northeast Province of the Society of Jesus in Buffalo, New York, United States, just north of the Delaware Avenue Historic District. Founded in 1870, the school has historical ties to Canisius College. Canisius operates independently from the New York State guidelines established by the Board of Regents. Canisius Secondary School
Canisius Secondary School is one of the earliest centres of learning in Zambia. It is located at Chikuni Mission about 10 km east of Chisekesi town in Monze District in the Southern Province. The history of the school starts with the founding of Chikuni Mission in July 1905 by Catholic Church missionary Fr Joseph Moreau S.J, of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) order of priests and brothers. The school is named after Saint Peter Canisius (Petrus Canisius), the first Dutchman to join the Jesuits. Primary schools were started at Chikuni and surrounding areas from the time the mission was founded, but it was only in August 1949 that the secondary school was opened. In 2009, the school celebrated 60 years of education to the people of Zambia.
