1984 Australian Federal Election
The 1984 Australian federal election was held in Australia on 1 December 1984. All 148 seats in the House of Representatives (24 of them newly created) and 46 of 76 seats in the Senate (12 of them newly created) were up for election. The incumbent Labor Party led by Prime Minister Bob Hawke defeated the opposition Liberal–National coalition, led by Andrew Peacock. The election was held in conjunction with two referendum questions, neither of which was carried. Background and issues The election had a long campaign and a high rate of informal voting for the House of Representatives, but decreased rate in the Senate (due to the introduction of the Group voting ticket). Ian Robinson (Australian Politician)
Ian Louis Robinson (27 March 1925 – 23 March 2017) was an Australian politician. Born in Coraki, New South Wales, he was educated at state schools before becoming a dairy farmer, a journalist and company director. In 1953 he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the Country Party member for Casino, holding the seat until 1963, when he retired to contest the Australian House of Representatives seat of Cowper. Cowper had been won in 1961 by Labor's Frank McGuren, who had defeated the ailing longtime Country Party member and former caretaker Prime Minister Earle Page, who had been too ill to campaign. Robinson defeated McGuren, and became Assistant Minister assisting the Postmaster-General, Alan Hulme, on 20 August 1971. Noel Hicks
Noel Jeffrey Hicks (born 4 November 1940) is a former Australian politician. He was a member of the House of Representatives from 1980 to 1998, representing the New South Wales seats of Riverina and Riverina-Darling for the National Party. He also served as mayor of Broken Hill, New South Wales, in the 1970s. Early life Hicks was born in Adelaide on 4 November 1940. He was raised from the age of 15 by his uncle and aunt Dick and Edie Algate. He worked as a plumber and road design draftsman prior to entering politics. After moving to Broken Hill, New South Wales, he served on the Broken Hill City Council from 1971 to 1977, including two terms as mayor (1974–1975 and 1976–77). Ross Free
Ross Vincent Free (born 7 March 1943) is a former Australian politician who served as a Labor member of the Australian House of Representatives representing the seat of Macquarie from 1980 until 1984, then Lindsay from 1984 until 1996. He served as a minister from 1990 until 1996 in both the Hawke and Keating ministries. Biography Free was born in Bathurst, New South Wales, and completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) and Graduate Diploma of Education at the University of Sydney, following which he worked as a school teacher. The Division of Macquarie is an Australian electoral division in the state of New South Wales. The division was created in 1900 and was one of the original 65 divisions contested at the first federal election. It is named for Lachlan Macquarie, who was Governor of New South Wales between 1810 and 1821. The division is located to the west of Sydney, and today it covers a large part of the Blue Mountains, as well as the Hawkesbury region on Sydney's western fringe. Robert James Brown (2 December 1933 – 30 March 2022) was an Australian Labor Party politician. Early life Brown was born in Pelaw Main and educated at Pelaw Main Primary School, Kurri Kurri Junior Technical High School, Maitland Boys High School, the University of Sydney ( B.Ec), Sydney Teachers' College ( Dip.Ed), Broken Hill Technical College and the University of New England. He married Elizabeth Joy Hirschausen in 1960 and had one daughter ( Kelly Hoare) and one son.
