Calle Mayor
''Main Street'' ( es, Calle Mayor) is a 1956 Spanish drama film directed by Juan Antonio Bardem starring Betsy Blair and José Suárez. It is based on a Carlos Arniches play titled '' La señorita de Trévelez''. Shooting locations were Palencia, Cuenca and Logroño. The film won the FIPRESCI Award at the Venice Film Festival. Juan Antonio Bardem
Juan Antonio Bardem Muñoz (2 June 1922 – 30 October 2002) was a Spanish film director and screen writer, born in Madrid. He was a member of the Communist Party. Bardem was best known for '' Muerte de un ciclista'' (1955) which won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1955 Cannes Film Festival, and '' El puente'' (1977) which won the Golden Prize at the 10th Moscow International Film Festival. His 1979 film '' Seven Days in January'' won the Golden Prize at the 11th Moscow International Film Festival. In 1981 he was a member of the jury at the 12th Moscow International Film Festival. In 1993 he was a member of the jury at the 43rd Berlin International Film Festival. In 1953 he and Luis García Berlanga founded a film magazine, ''Objetivo'', which existed until 1956. Bardem is the father of director Miguel Bardem and uncle of actor Javier Bardem. Bardem died in Madrid in 2002, at age 80. Luis Peña (actor)
Luis Peña Martínez-Illescas (20 June 1918, in Santander – 29 March 1977, in Madrid) was a Spanish actor. Peña came from a family of actors and performed in films and theater. His sister was the actress Pastora Peña. In 1946, he married Luchy Soto; the two formed a stage company. He worked on filmed plays for television which were shown on Televisión Española in the 1960s. At the end of his career, he acted for Carlos Saura. This is a list of submissions to the 30th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. The Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film was created in 1956 by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to honour non-English-speaking films produced outside the United States. The award is handed out annually, and is accepted by the winning film's director, although it is considered an award for the submitting country as a whole. Countries are invited by the Academy to submit their best films for competition according to strict rules, with only one film being accepted from each country. ''Nunca pasa nada'' or ''Nothing Ever Happens'' is a 1963 Spanish-French drama film directed by Juan Antonio Bardem. Starring a mixed cast of French and Spanish actors it was shot both in Spanish and French. It was a commercial flop at the time of its release. The film was entered into the Venice Film Festival. Julia Gutiérrez Caba was named Best Actress in Spain by the Cinema Writers Circle, and received the ''Fotogramas de Plata'' prize. ''Nunca pasa nada'' depicts an environment and characters similar to the ones appearing in Bardem's great success, '' Calle Mayor'' (''Main Street''), to the point that some critics nicknamed it disdainfully ''Calle Menor'' (''Minor Street''). Jorge Semprún Maura (; 10 December 1923 – 7 June 2011) was a Spanish writer and politician who lived in France most of his life and wrote primarily in French.
