Amílcar Cabral International Airport , also known as Sal International Airport, is the main international airport of Cape Verde. The airport is named after the revolutionary leader Amílcar Cabral. It is located two km west-southwest from Espargos on Sal Island. Sal is the main hub for the national airline, Cabo Verde Airlines; and serves as a base for carrier Cabo Verde Express. This airport was also one of NASA's locations for a facility to handle the Space Shuttle after reentering from orbit. History The first airport on Sal Island was built in 1939 by Italy, as a fuel and provisions stopping-point on routes from Europe to South America. Cabral (2001–2017), also known as "JP", was a gold medalist dressage horse ridden by Natasha Baker. The Polish-born British dressage horse, a Paralympic gold winner (Equestrian at the 2012 Summer Paralympics, 2012) in Rio de Janeiro, Rio, was euthanized. Adilson Tavares Varela (born 22 October 1988), commonly known as Cabral, is a former professional footballer. He spent most of his career at Basel, winning ten honours including five Swiss Super League championships and three Swiss Cup titles. He also had brief spells in three foreign countries. After representing his adopted Switzerland 30 times between under-18 and under-21 level, Cabral was called up in 2012 for his native Cape Verde but did not play. The Amílcar Cabral Cup was an international association football tournament for Western African nations. The competition originally was played on an annual basis until 1989, since then it was played on a biennial basis. The tournament is named after Amílcar Cabral. There has been no edition since 2007. Mauritania was to host in 2009, then rescheduled the tournament to 2010 and later cancelled it altogether. History In 1970 a predecessor tournament was started. Pedro Álvares Cabral ( or ; born Pedro Álvares de Gouveia; c. 1467 or 1468 – c. 1520) was a Portuguese nobleman, military commander, navigator and explorer regarded as the European discoverer of Brazil.
