Web Archive (stylized by Apple Inc., Apple as Web archive, extension .webarchive) is a Web archive file format available on macOS and Windows for saving and reviewing complete web pages using the Safari (web browser), Safari web browser. The Web Archive format differs from a standalone HTML file because it also saves linked files such as images, Cascading Style Sheets, CSS, and JavaScript. The Web Archive format is a concatenation of source files with filenames saved in the binary Property list, plist format using NSKeyedArchiver. Support for Web Archive documents was added in Safari 4 Beta on Windows and was included in subsequent versions, until its discontinuation in 2012. Safari on iOS and iPadOS (iPhone and iPad) has supported Web Archive files since at least iOS 13. A web page (or webpage) is a World Wide Web, Web document that is accessed in a web browser. A website typically consists of many web pages hyperlink, linked together under a common domain name. The term "web page" is therefore a metaphor of paper pages bound together into a book. Navigation Each web page is identified by a distinct URL, Uniform Resource Locator (URL). WebKit
WebKit is a browser engine primarily used in Apple's Safari web browser, as well as all web browsers on iOS and iPadOS. WebKit is also used by the PlayStation consoles starting with the PS3, the Tizen mobile operating systems, the Amazon Kindle e-book reader, Nintendo consoles starting with the 3DS Internet Browser, GNOME Web, and the discontinued BlackBerry Browser. In computing, an archive file stores the content of one or more files, possibly compressed, with associated metadata such as file name, directory structure, error detection and correction information, commentary, compressed data archives, storage, and sometimes encryption. An archive file is often used to facilitate portability, distribution and backup, and to reduce storage use. Applications Portability As an archive file stores file system information, including file content and metadata, it can be leveraged for file system content portability across heterogeneous systems. The WARC (Web ARChive) archive format specifies a method for combining multiple digital resources into an aggregate archive file together with related information. These combined resources are saved as a WARC computer file, file which can be replayed using appropriate software such as Webrecorder#ReplayWeb.page, ReplayWeb.page, or used by archive websites such as the Wayback Machine. The WARC format is a revision of the Internet Archive's Heritrix#Arc_files, ARC_IA File Format that has traditionally been used to store "Web crawler, web crawls" as sequences of content blocks harvested from the World Wide Web. MHTML
MHTML, an initialism of "MIME encapsulation of aggregate HTML documents", is a web archiving file format used to combine, in a single computer file, the HTML code and its companion resources (such as images) that are represented by external hyperlinks in the web page's HTML code. The content of an MHTML file is encoded using the same techniques that were first developed for HTML email messages, using the MIME content type multipart/related. MHTML files use an .mhtml or .mht filename extension. The first part of the file is an e-mail header. The second part is normally HTML code. Subsequent parts are additional resources identified by their original uniform resource locators (URLs) and encoded in base64 binary-to-text encoding. Mozilla Archive Format
The Mozilla Archive Format (MAFF) is a legacy Web archive file format that was provided by Firefox through an extension, used to store one or more web pages with their associated audio, video, and other related web resources to a single file. Unlike MHTML, which uses MIME encoding within a single HTML file, MAFF compresses the page into a Zip container file. The extension supported versions of Firefox from 2007 to 2017 but not later, and there are no plans to update it. It continued to be supported in Cyberfox and Waterfox, forks of Firefox that try to keep features removed from Firefox like the traditional extension API.
