Upton, Slough
Upton is a suburb of Slough, in the Borough of Slough, Slough district, in the ceremonial county of Berkshire, England. Until the Local Government Act 1972, local government reforms of 1974 it was in Buckinghamshire. It was one of the villages that developed into the town. History The Domesday Book survey of 1086 refers to Upton and a wood for 200 pigs, worth £15. Upton took its name from its situation at the top of the slope from the river terrace — the various levels in the area having been formed in the Last Ice Age. The ancient parish, and the civil parish until 1894, included Chalvey and Slough, originally hamlets, and was formally known as Upton-cum-Chalvey. In 1894, the new civil parish of Slough was formed from the parish. Tetbury Upton
Tetbury Upton is a small village and civil parish in the Cotswolds area of Gloucestershire, England. The parish extends in an arc around the north, west, and south of the town of Tetbury, and includes the village of Tetbury Upton on the B4014 road 1.5 miles (2 km) north of the town and the village of Doughton on the A433 road southwest of the town. Upton and Doughton were historically things in the ancient parish of Tetbury, and the area became a separate civil parish in 1894. By 1901 Tetbury Upton's total population reached 905, but by 2011 the population had declined to 309. Upton House is a Neoclassical country house built in 1752, whose design is usually attributed to William Halfpenny, of Bristol. The parish also includes Highgrove House near Doughton. Despite its small size, the parish is the most populous in 'Grumbolds Ash' electoral ward. Upton is a village in the northern part of the Wirral Peninsula, England, and is situated within of Birkenhead, of the Dee Estuary, a similar distance from the River Mersey, and from Liverpool Bay. The village is a Upton (ward), ward of the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral in the metropolitan county of Merseyside. Upton was in the Historic counties of England, traditional county of Cheshire. At the 2011 United Kingdom census, 2011 census, the population was 16,130. Upton was originally settled as an Anglo-Saxon farming community, and remained as a farming community until the village's rapid urbanisation and expansion from the mid-19th century. This was brought about by the development of Liverpool as a major port, with rail and road links across the Mersey estuary. Upton, Bexley
Upton was a hamlet in the southwest of today's Bexleyheath in the London Borough of Bexley, in the historic county of Kent. Originally, it was on fertile, south- and west-facing slopes, below the main heathland/pasture of the parish of Bexley. As the town known as Bexleyheath arose during the late 19th century and in early half of the next century, Upton became absorbed into it. In 1860, Red House, the elegant brick and tile home designed by Philip Webb for William Morris, was built on the heath in Upton. Red House is now preserved by the National Trust. From 1887 to 1978, it was heavily associated with a hospital on Upton Road. The building was still there in 2019. Upton Grey is a village and civil parish in Hampshire, England. History Roman times The village is on the line of an ancient Roman road, the Chichester to Silchester Way. Norman times The Grey derives from the years when the village was owned by the de Grey family and was used to differentiate the village from the many other Uptons. Elizabethan times The Manor House dates from Elizabethan times when the Matthew family lived there. The famous Elizabethan poet, George Puttenham, lived at Herriard House but also had a farm at Upton Grey. It was there that- at least according to his wife in their divorce proceedings- he kept his seventeen-year-old sex slave whom he had kidnapped in London.
