Camp Townsend
Camp Smith is a military installation of the New York Army National Guard in Cortlandt Manor, in the Cortlandt, New York, Town of Cortlandt, near Peekskill, New York, about north of New York City, at the northern border of Westchester County, New York, Westchester County, and consists of . Established in 1882 by General Frederick Townsend, Adjutant General of New York, it was formerly known as "Camp Townsend", but was renamed in 1919 to "Camp Smith" for Governor Alfred E. Norfolk County ( ) is a rural single-tier municipality on the north shore of Lake Erie in Southwestern Ontario, Canada with a 2023 population of 73,015. Despite its name, it is no longer a county by definition, as all municipal services are handled by a single level of government. Mount Townsend (Snowy Mountains)
Mount Townsend is a mountain in the Main Range of the Great Dividing Range, located in the Snowy Mountains region of New South Wales, Australia. With an elevation of above sea level, Mount Townsend is the second-highest peak of mainland Australia. Located in Kosciuszko National Park, the mountain is north of Australia's highest mainland peak, Mount Kosciuszko. Although lower than Mount Kosciuszko, Mount Townsend has a more craggy peak and is arguably more dominant than the relatively round-topped Mount Kosciuszko. The confusion about swapping the names of Mount Kosciuszko and Mount Townsend was straightened out in 1940 by B. T. Dowd, a cartographer and historian of the NSW Lands Department. Townsend Observatory, owned and administered by the University of Canterbury, is part of the Christchurch Arts Centre, Arts Centre of Christchurch, New Zealand and was open on clear Friday evenings. The building collapsed in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake. History James Townsend was one of the Canterbury Pilgrims, having arrived on the ''Cressy (ship), Cressy'' in December 1850. In his retirement, he lived on Park Terrace, just north of the site of the University of Canterbury, Canterbury College. In 1891, he gifted his Equatorial mount, equatorial telescope to the college, as he wished to make it available to the community. Townsend's telescope was built by Thomas Cooke (scientific_instrument_maker), Thomas Cooke in 1864.
