Television in Denmark was established in the 1950s and was run by a monopoly with only one channel available until the 1980s. History The first television broadcasts in Denmark started on 2 October 1951. These were carried out by the national radio broadcaster Statsradiofonien and consisted of a one-hour broadcast three times per week. The broadcasts were initially limited to a few hundred homes in the capital area. Daily broadcasts started in 1954. With the opening of the Gladsaxe transmitter, most of Zealand could watch television. The entire country was covered in 1960 when the transmitter on Bornholm opened. Statsradiofonien was renamed Danmarks Radio (DR) in 1959. The first news programme, TV-Avisen, started in 1965. Colour television started test transmissions in 1967, with colour television becoming the norm in filming and broadcasting from 1970 on. TV 2 News
TV 2 News (former working title: TV 2 Nyhedskanalen) is a Danish language television news channel which started broadcasting on 1 December 2006. It's one of the first 24-hour news channels in the Danish language ( 24Nordjyske is also a 24-hour news channel but is only shown in Nordjylland). The channel has editorial offices at the TV 2 headquarters at Kvægtorvet in Odense, and in Copenhagen. History On 10 December 2007, TV 2 News began using Viz Mosart from Vizrt for the channel's automation, becoming the first channel in the world to do so. At that time, TV 2 News broadcast 16 hours of live content daily. On 31 March 2008 TV 2 News started broadcasting in the 16:9 widescreen format with an entirely new set of graphics. DR Update
DR Update was a Danish 24-hour television news channel broadcast by DR. Although the channel was primarily distributed via the web, it was also available on regular broadcast television from the start on satellite from Canal Digital and from some community antennas. The programme content was updated between 07:00 and 23:00. In January 2008, the Danish Parliament approved broadcast of the channel on the digital terrestrial network. The channel used frequency space which was used to simulcast news bulletins in sign language between in the early evening. DR Update broadcast round-the-clock, except between 17:00 and 20:00, when the space was used by sign language simulcasts. The terrestrial launch took place on 19 February 2008. Boxer TV A/S
Boxer TV A/S is a company that is broadcasting pay television channels on the digital terrestrial television network in Denmark since February 1, 2009. It is a subsidiary of Boxer TV Access, a Swedish company which is owned by Com Hem. History Boxer won the right to build four multiplex networks to broadcast digital television in 2008. They were competing against ''Danmarks Digital TV A/S'' (owned by Telenor) and ''Danmarks TV A/S'' (owned by Modern Times Group, MTG). The procurement was organized by the government agency ''Mediesekretariatet'' and in March 2008 chose Swedish Boxer as the gatekeeper out of the three applicants. As Telenor and MTG both owned satellite platforms in Denmark, and Boxer did not have any operations in Denmark, Boxer won the contract. DR (broadcaster)
DR (), officially the Danish Broadcasting Corporation in English, is a Danish public-service radio and television broadcasting company. Founded in 1925 as a public-service organization, it is Denmark's oldest and largest electronic media enterprise. DR shares many of its organisational characteristics with its British counterpart, the BBC, on which it was largely modelled. DR is a founding member of the European Broadcasting Union. Bjarne Corydon will become the Director-General of DR in August 2025. DR was originally funded by a media licence, however since 2022, the media license has been replaced by an addition to the Danish income tax. A multiplex or mux, also known as a bouquet, is a grouping of program services as interleaved data packets for broadcast over a network or modulated multiplexed medium, particularly terrestrial broadcasting. The program services are broadcast as part of one transmission and split out at the receiving end. 6'eren is a Danish subscription television channel operated by Warner Bros. Discovery EMEA. It replaced SBS Net on 1 January 2009. The channel's target audience is males, branding itself with the slogan "Denmark's got a new TV Channel - and it's for men" (Danmark har fået en ny TV-kanal, og den er for mænd). The channel also shows La Liga and FA Cup football. Matches involving Swansea City during the 2013–14 Premier League season, were extensively shown on the channel due to Michael Laudrup's time at the club as manager.
