Social Bookmarking
Social bookmarking is an online service which allows users to add, annotate, edit, and share Internet bookmark, bookmarks of web documents. Many online bookmark management services have launched since 1996; Delicious (website), Delicious, founded in 2003, popularized the terms "social bookmarking" and "Tag (metadata), tagging". Tagging is a significant feature of social bookmarking systems, allowing users to organize their bookmarks and develop shared vocabularies known as folksonomy, folksonomies. Common features Unlike file sharing, social bookmarking does not save the ''resources'' themselves, merely bookmarks that ''reference'' them, i.e. a link to the bookmarked page. Descriptions may be added to these bookmarks in the form of metadata, so users may understand the content of the resource without first needing to download it for themselves. In the context of the World Wide Web, a bookmark is a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) that is stored for later retrieval in any of various storage formats. All modern web browsers include bookmark features. Bookmarks are called favorites or Internet shortcuts in Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge, and by virtue of that browser's large market share, these terms have been synonymous with ''bookmark'' since the First Browser War. Bookmarks are normally accessed through a menu in the user's web browser, and folders are commonly used for organization. In addition to bookmarking methods within most browsers, many external applications offer bookmarks management. Bookmarks have been incorporated in browsers since the ViolaWWW browser in 1992, and Mosaic browser in 1993. Simpy
Simpy was a web-based personal and social bookmarking service. The service launched in May 2004. In 2010, it was acquired by Reuters and ceased operation as a social bookmarking site in April of that year. Service features Simpy uses tags and tag clouds to aid Internet bookmark, bookmark recall and allows bookmarks to be shared or kept private. In addition to saving, tagging, and sharing links, users could also save, tag, and search free-text notes. Most data pages also had RSS, RSS feeds. Simpy's founder is one of the developers of Lucene, a popular text search toolkit. Thus, Simpy had powerful search capabilities. The service allowed for cooperation via groups with different levels of privacy and for the discovery of relevant and new links via its watchlists and watchlist filters. Digg (stylized in lowercase as digg) is an American news aggregator with a curated front page, aiming to select articles specifically for the Internet audience such as science, trending political issues, and viral phenomenon, viral Internet issues. It was launched in its current form on July 31, 2012, with support for sharing content to other social platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. Digg was formerly a popular social news website, allowing people to vote user-generated and web content up or down, called ''digging'' and ''burying'', respectively. Pinboard (also called Pinboard.in) is a social bookmarking website developed and run by Maciej Cegłowski. It has a plain design and a focus on personal management of Bookmark (World Wide Web), bookmarks using Tag (metadata), tags to organize them, similar to early versions of the Delicious (website), Delicious social bookmarking service. History When Pinboard launched in July 2009, it charged an approximately $3 signup fee for new users. This fee automatically increased by a fraction of a cent for each new user, a system intended to slow the growth of the site, to make enough money to sustain development, and to discourage spammers from joining. A few months later Cegłowski released an option to save ("archive") copies of bookmarked web pages with a $25 yearly subscription fee, and Pinboard became his full-time job with 1,200 users. Connectbeam
Connectbeam, a company based in Mountain View, California, provided enterprise social software. The company provided two core services: social bookmarking and aggregation of links and metadata for content from other social software applications. The company's stated goal was to establish the enterprise social network by integrating employees' user-generated content. Connectbeam was founded by Puneet Gupta in December 2005. Gabriel Venture Partners lead a Series A round of $3.5 million for the company in July 2007. Diigo
Diigo is a social bookmarking website that allows signed-up users to bookmark and tag Web pages. Additionally, it allows users to highlight any part of a webpage and attach sticky notes to specific highlights or to a whole page. These annotations can be kept private, shared with a group within Diigo, or be forwarded to someone else via a special link. The name "Diigo" is an acronym from "Digest of Internet Information, Groups and Other stuff". Premium account holders can perform full-text searches of cached copies of bookmarks. A full-text search also searches page URLs, tags and annotations. This means that premium account holders can choose to omit tags that already appear in the text of a page to be bookmarked (although text inside images cannot be searched). Mister Wong was one of the largest European free social bookmarking web services. History The website was a German startup, established in 2006 by Kai Tietjen. Gnolia
Gnolia, named Ma.gnolia until 2009, was a social bookmarking web site with an emphasis on design, social features, and open standards. In January 2009, Gnolia lost members' bookmarks in a widely reported data loss incident. It relaunched as a smaller service several months later and was ultimately shut down at the end of 2010. Users could rate bookmarks and mark bookmarks as private. Unlike its main competitor Delicious, Ma.gnolia stored snapshots of bookmarked web pages. One feature that distinguished it from other similar web sites was the ''group'' feature, which allowed several users to share a common collection of bookmarks, managed by a selected number of group managers.
