Sitana
''Sitana'' is a genus of lizards, collectively known as the fan-throated lizards, in the family Agamidae. They are found in Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan. The genus comprises fourteen species, including several recently discovered ones, two of which are from Sri Lanka. In 2016, a new genus named ''Sarada (lizard), Sarada'' was erected, consisting of one former ''Sitana'' species and two newly described ones. ''Sarada'' is the sister genus of ''Sitana''. Together they form a clade whose sister group is ''Otocryptis''. Description ''Sitana'' is genus of small to medium-sized lizards. They are ground dwellers, primarily eating insects but also mollusks and seeds. Males measure in snout–vent length, and females measure . In an example of convergent evolution, males have prominent dewlaps, similar to anoles, which they use in communication during the breeding season. ''Sitana ponticeriana'', the Pondichéry fan-throated lizard, is a species of agamid lizard found in eastern peninsular India. It was earlier thought to be widespread but studies in 2016 resulted in the splitting of the group into several species placed in two genera. The genus ''Sitana'' has an enlarged projecting scale on the posterior side of the hind thigh which is absent in the sister genus ''Sarada''. The species is found mostly on the ground in open ground patches in thin forests. When disturbed this lizard sometimes runs with a bipedal gait. Descriptions Upper head-scales small, sharply keeled; ''canthus rostralis'' and supraciliary edge sharp, with much enlarged scales. ''Sitana devakai'' (Devaka's fan-throated lizard) is an endemic species of agamid lizards recently found from Sri Lanka. The species was first found from Puttalama district. The lizard is also known to found in Tamil Nadu of India, but not given valid identification. The species was named in honor of Dr. Devaka K. Weerakoon, who is a conservation biologist. He is a Professor of Zoology in University of Colombo. ''Sitana spinaecephalus'', the spiny-headed fan-throated lizard, is a species of Agamidae, agamid lizard. It is endemic to India. It is found in Shrubland, scrublands and Forest, forests occurring in the west-central states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. ''Sitana gokakensis'', the Gokak fan-throated lizard, is a species of cryptic agamid lizard which is endemic to India. Description ''Sitana gokakensis'' has a darker head compared to its body, with a dark brown dorsum and blue and dark pink coloration. Its iris is yellow with cream-colored tympanum. The dorsal side has five black blotches, with brick-red flanks and cream-colored enlarged scales on the flank and thigh. The belly is off-white with brown speckles.
