Siren (mythology)
In Greek mythology, sirens () are female humanlike beings with alluring voices; they appear in a scene in the ''Odyssey'' in which Odysseus saves his crew's lives. Roman poets place them on some small islands called Sirenum scopuli. In some later, rationalized traditions, the literal geography of the "flowery" island of Anthemoessa, or Anthemusa, is fixed: sometimes on Cape Pelorum and at others in the islands known as the Sirenuse, near Paestum, or in Capreae. All such locations were surrounded by cliffs and rocks. Sirens continued to be used as a symbol of the dangerous temptation embodied by women regularly throughout Christian art of the medieval era. "Siren" can also be used as a slang term for a woman considered both very attractive and dangerous. Nomenclature The etymology of the name is contested. Robert S. P. Beekes has suggested a Pre-Greek origin. Others connect the name to σειρά (''seirá'', "rope, cord") and εἴρω (''eírō'', "to tie, join, faste ...

Siren (alarm)
A siren is a noise-making warning device. There are two general types: mechanical sirens and electronic sirens. Civil defense sirens are mounted in fixed locations and used to warn of natural disasters or attacks. Sirens are used on emergency service vehicles such as ambulances, police cars, and fire engines. Many fire sirens (used for summoning volunteer firefighters) serve double duty as tornado or civil defense sirens, alerting an entire community of impending danger. Most fire sirens are either mounted on the roof of a fire station or on a pole next to the fire station. Fire sirens can also be mounted on or near government buildings, on tall structures such as water towers, as well as in systems where several sirens are distributed around a town for better sound coverage. Most fire sirens are single tone and mechanically driven by electric motors with a rotor attached to the shaft. Some newer sirens are Electronics, electronically driven speakers. Fire sirens are often cal ...

Sirenidae
Sirenidae, the sirens, are a family of neotenic aquatic salamanders. Family members have very small fore limbs, and lack hind limbs altogether. In one species, the skeleton in their fore limbs is made of only cartilage. In contrast to most other salamanders, they have external gills bunched together on the neck in both larval and adult states. Sirens are found only in the Southeastern United States and northern Mexico. Although they are primarily carnivorous, they are the only salamanders observed eating plant material.Hill, R. L., Mendelson, J. R. & Stabile, J. L. 2015. Direct observation and review of herbivory in Sirenidae (Amphibia: Caudata). Southeastern Naturalist 14, N5-N9. Description Sirens are quite distinct from other salamanders, and in some classifications they form their own suborder, Sirenoidea, or as a completely distinct order (Meantes or Trachystomata). Genetic analysis variously places them as the sister to other Salamandroidea or as sister to all other salam ...

Vivian (Paper Mario)
is a video game character appearing in the 2004 role-playing video game '' Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door''. A purple ghost-like being who can manipulate fire and shadows, she is originally introduced alongside her older sisters as the Shadow Sirens, a trio of secondary antagonists who get in the way of the player character Mario. Vivian later turns into one of the story's main protagonists after she befriends Mario and join his party for the rest of the game. In the original Japanese version and some European translations, Vivian is a transgender woman. Intentional misgendering from her eldest sister Beldam is a central part of the abuse that eventually leads Vivian to side with the more understanding Mario and revolt against the other Shadow Sirens; Vivian herself calls her original trio the "Shadow Sisters", with Beldam repeatedly berating her for using the term "Sisters" and refusing to acknowledge Vivian as female. All original English and German releases of ''The Tho ...

Siren Rock
The Hudson Mountains are a mountain range in western Ellsworth Land just east of Pine Island Bay at the Walgreen Coast of the Amundsen Sea. They are of volcanic origin, consisting of low scattered mountains and nunataks that protrude through the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. The Hudson Mountains are bounded on the north by Cosgrove Ice Shelf and on the south by Pine Island Glacier. The mountains were volcanically active during the Miocene and Pliocene, but there is evidence for an eruption about two millennia ago and uncertain indications of activity in the 20th century. Geography and geomorphology The Hudson Mountains rise in western Ellsworth Land of West Antarctica and were discovered in 1940 by the United States Antarctic Service Expedition. The mountains lie at some distance from the Amundsen Sea's Walgreen Coast, facing Pine Island Bay. The Cosgrove Ice Shelf lies north of the Hudson Mountains. The mountains are remote and visits are rare. In 1991, they were prospect ...
