''Semotilus atromaculatus'', the creek chub or the common creek chub, is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Leuciscidae. This species is found in the eastern US and Canada. Differing in size and color depending on origin of development, the creek chub can usually be defined by a dark brown body with a black lateral line spanning horizontally across the body. The Dixie chub (''Semotilus thoreauianus'') is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Leuciscidae. It is endemic to southeastern United States. Description The Dixie chub is similar in shape to the creek chub, (''Semotilus atromaculatus'') although it is typically a more robust and shorter than the creek chub. It also has larger and fewer lateral line scales, the origin of the dorsal fin is to the rear of that of the pelvic fin whereas in ''S. atromaculatus'' it sits directly over the pelvic fin origin, and the spots on the dorsal fin and caudal fin are less distinct. In the breeding season the males develop four large, hooked tubercles on either side of the head, with those nearest the nares frequently becoming fused. The fallfish (''Semotilus corporalis'') is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish in the family Leuciscidae. The fallfish is the largest minnow species native to Eastern North America. Description Average specimens generally measure about in length, but individuals occasionally grow to with exceptional specimens of more than having been recorded. Juvenile fallfish have a dark stripe that runs down the center of their body. They are a silvery shade on the top and sides of the body, but have a white shading on the belly. Breeding males develop a pinkish tone on the opercular region, although the species does not develop bright breeding colors. The Sandhills chub (''Semotilus lumbee'') is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Leuciscidae. There are 4 species of Semotilus, 2 of which occur in South Carolina (Creek Chub and Sandhills Chub). This fish is found only in North Carolina and South Carolina. The Sandhills chub is predominately found in the Carolina Sandhills and some areas of Cape Fear, Pee Dee and Santee river drainages. It is characterized by its robust body, large head and lack of a dark blotch or smudge on their dorsal fin which is present on the closely related Creek Chub. The Sandhills chub has fine scales, a pinkish body and can be up to 9.4 inches. David Starr Jordan (January 19, 1851 – September 19, 1931) was the founding president of Stanford University, serving from 1891 to 1913. He was an ichthyologist during his research career.
