Selonia
Selonia (; ), also known as Augšzeme (the "Highland"), is one of the Historical Latvian Lands encompassing the eastern part of the historical region of Semigallia () as well as a portion of northeastern Lithuania. Its main city and cultural center is Jēkabpils. The Selonian language has become extinct, though some of the inhabitants still speak a Selonian subdialect. Selonian Language
Selonian was an East Baltic language, which was spoken by the East Baltic tribe of the Selonians, who until the 15th century lived in Selonia, a territory in southeastern Latvia and northeastern Lithuania. The language persisted until the 16th century. History Traces of the Selonian language can still be found in the territories the Selonians inhabited, especially in the accent and phonetics of the so-called Selonian dialect of the Latvian language. There are some traces of the Selonian language in the northeastern sub-dialects of the Aukštaitian dialect of the Lithuanian language, mostly in the lexicon. Historical Latvian Lands
Historical Latvian Lands () or formerly Cultural regions of Latvia () are several areas within Latvia formally recognised as distinct from the rest of the country. These are: Kurzeme (Courland), Zemgale (Semigallia), Latgale (Latgalia), Vidzeme, and Sēlija (Selonia). While some of these regions are seen purely as culturally distinct, others have historically been parts of different countries and have been used to divide the country for administrative and other purposes. On 16 June 2021, the Saeima adopted the which aims to create the necessary preconditions for strengthening the common identity of the population and for the preservation and sustainable development of the cultural and historical environment and cultural spaces of the historical Latvian lands. Zemgale
Semigallia is one of the Historical Latvian Lands located to the south of the Daugava and to the north of the Saule region of Samogitia. The territory is split between Latvia and Lithuania, previously inhabited by the Semigallian Baltic tribe. They are noted for their long resistance (1219–1290) against the German crusaders and Teutonic Knights during the Northern Crusades. Semigallians had close linguistic and cultural ties with Samogitians. Name The name of Semigallia appears in sources such as ''Seimgala'', ''Zimgola'' and ''Sem'' 'e'''gallen''. The -gal element means 'border' or 'end', while the first syllable corresponds to ''ziem'' ('north'). Staburags Parish
Staburags Parish () is an administrative unit of Aizkraukle Municipality in the Selonia region of Latvia. Covering 58.5 km2 on the forested left bank of the Daugava River where it widens into the Pļaviņas Reservoir, the parish is one of the most sparsely populated areas in Selonia with just 327 residents as of January 2024. The parish takes its name from the now-submerged Staburags cliff, an 18-metre travertine formation that was a Latvian cultural and natural landmark until it was flooded in 1965 during the construction of the Pļaviņas hydroelectric dam. The parish features a memorial ensemble at the former Vīgante Manor estate that commemorates the lost cliff through interpretive displays, walking paths, and cultural elements honouring both the natural formation and its place in Latvian literature and music. Sunākste Parish
Sunākste Parish () is an administrative unit of Aizkraukle Municipality in the Selonia region of Latvia. It covers 109 km2 of gently rolling farmland and mixed woodland in the northern foothills of the Augšzeme Highlands, part of the historical Selonia region. Its administrative centre is the linear village of Sunākste; other settlements include Lielsunākste and Pikslauki. According to the Central Statistical Bureau, the parish had 366 residents on 1 January 2024, giving a population density of just 3.4 inhabitants per square kilometre. Created as a local government unit during Latvia's first republic, Sunākste Parish was dissolved in the 1949 Soviet reform, re-established in 1990 and attached to Jaunjelgava Municipality in 2009. Ilūkste
Ilūkste (; ; ) is a town in Augšdaugava Municipality in the Selonia region of Latvia. The population in 2020 was 2,216. History The territory of modern Ilūkste was inhabited by the Selonians, an ancient Baltic peoples, Baltic tribe. As a settlement Ilūkste started to grow in the beginning of the 16th century when it was part of the Livonian Confederation and was administered by the Komtur of Daugavpils. Ilūkste was first mentioned in written sources in 1559 as a small village, part of the estate lands of Count Kasper Sieberg. After the secularization of the Livonian Order, Ilūkste became part of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. In 1567 a Lutheranism, Lutheran church was built in Ilūkste. Jaunjelgava
Jaunjelgava (, literally "New Jelgava"; ) is a town on the left bank of the Daugava River in Aizkraukle Municipality, in the Selonia region of Latvia, about 80 km southeast of Riga. The population in 2020 was 1,762. History There is no evidence that territory of a modern Jaunjelgava had been inhabited before 15th century. However, a selonian Sērene hillfort existed from the modern town. A country estate Vecsērene manor was established around 1450 not far from modern town. During the 15th century the territory of the town was used as a place where merchants from Riga would transport their goods from boats to carriages because, due to the Daugava rapids, it was difficult to navigate further downstream. Jēkabpils
Jēkabpils () is a state city in Jēkabpils Municipality in southeastern Latvia, located roughly halfway between the capital Riga and Daugavpils, and spanning the Daugava River. The name of the city literally translates into "Castle of Jacob". Historic Jēkabpils lies on the left bank, in Selonia, while the historic Krustpils () lies on the right bank, in Latgale.
