Sandman
The Sandman is a mythical character originating in Germanic and Scandinavian folklore who puts people to sleep and encourages and inspires beautiful dreams by sprinkling magical sand onto their eyes. Representation in traditional folklore The Sandman is a traditional character in many children's stories and books. In Scandinavian folklore, he is said to sprinkle sand or dust on or into the eyes of children at night to bring on sleep and dreams. The grit or "sleep" (rheum) in one's eyes upon waking is the supposed result of the Sandman's work the previous night. Literature E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776–1822) wrote a short story in 1816 titled ''Der Sandmann'', which showed how sinister such a character could be made. "The Sandman" ( German: ''Der Sandmann'') is a short story by . It was the first in an 1817 book of stories titled ''Die Nachtstücke'' (''The Night Pieces''). Plot summary The story is told by a narrator who claims to have known Lothar. It begins by quoting three letters: # A letter from Nathanael to Lothar, the brother of his fiancée, Clara. Nathanael recalls his childhood terror of the legendary Sandman, who was said to steal the eyes of children who would not go to bed and feed them to his own children who lived in the moon. Nathanael came to associate the Sandman with a mysterious nightly visitor to his father. He recounts that one night, he hid in his father's room to see the Sandman. It is Coppelius, an obnoxious lawyer come to carry out alchemical experiments. Coppelius begins taking "shining masses" out of the fire and hammering them into face-like shapes without eyes. Nilus The Sandman
''Nilus the Sandman'' is a Canadian part-animated and part-live-action television series that originally aired on The Family Channel from 5 October 1996 to 25 October 1998. The series was preceded by three ''Nilus the Sandman'' television specials broadcast between 1991 and 1994 on CTV. The series was produced by Cambium Film & Video Productions and Delaney & Friends Cartoon Productions, and distributed by The Family Channel and Western International Communications (WIC). The show features the Sandman, named Nilus (voiced by Long John Baldry), who helps children and teenagers through their dreams while they are asleep, with the dream stories being animated. The scenes at the beginning and the end of each episode are shot in live action in Vancouver, British Columbia. The show has a total of 26 episodes which aired over two seasons. Ole Lukøje
"Ole Lukøje" is a literary fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen based upon a folk tale telling of a mysterious mythic creature of the Sandman who gently takes children to sleep and, depending on how good or bad they were, shows them various dreams.Under each arm he carries an umbrella; one of them, with pictures on the inside, he spreads over the good children, and then they dream the most beautiful stories the whole night. But the other umbrella has no pictures, and this he holds over the naughty children so that they sleep heavily, and wake in the morning without having dreamed at all.Ole Lukøje's name is actually composed of two parts: ''Ole '' is a common Danish masculine name, and ''Lukøje'' a compound of the Danish words for 'close' and 'eye'. Paul Berry (animator)
Paul Thomas Berry (13 March 1961 – 26 June 2001) was a British stop-motion animator who first worked on Cosgrove Hall Films, Cosgrove Hall's ''The Wind in the Willows (1983 film), Wind in the Willows'' before directing the 1991 Oscar-nominated short horror stop-motion animation film ''The Sandman (1991 film), The Sandman''. In 1992, the film was awarded the Craft Prize for Best Animation at Ottawa International Animation Festival. Career Other projects Paul Berry worked on included ''The Nightmare Before Christmas'' (animator), ''James and the Giant Peach (film), James and the Giant Peach'' (animation supervisor), ''Monkeybone'' (supervising animator) and the music video for Primus (band), Primus' cover of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia". ''The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause'' is a 2006 American Christmas comedy film directed by Michael Lembeck.
