Rethymno (municipality)
The Municipality of Rethymno ( Greek: Δήμος Ρεθύμνης) is a municipality in the Rethymno of the region of Crete established by Kallikratis reform. It consists of the unification of the pre-existing municipalities Arkadi, Lappa, Rethymno and Nikiforos Fokas of Rethymno Prefecture. The extent of the new municipality is , and it had a population of 57,216 inhabitants at the 2021 census. The seat of the new municipality is the town Rethymno. Argyroupoli, Rethymno
Argyroupoli () is a village in the municipality of Rethymno, Rethymno regional unit, Crete, Greece, with a population of 313 (2021 census) and an altitude of 260 m. It was previously known as Lappa or Lampa, Stimboli, and Polis. Name It is the site of the ancient city (polis) of Lappa. In the Middle Ages, it was named ''Stimpoli(s)'' by reinterpretation as a single word ("in the city"), later simply ''Polis''. Until 1669, the name Αργυρούπολις 'Silver City' was used. In the seventeenth century, it was also called facetiously Σαμαρόπολις, Γαϊδαρόπολις 'donkey city', or Γαϊδουρόπολις. From 1868-1878, it was called Stambolköy in Turkish (that is, 'Stambol village'). Pigi, Rethymno
Pigi is a local community of the Rethymno Municipality in the Rethymno regional unit of the region of Crete established by Kallikratis reform. Previously, it was part of the municipal district of Municipality of Arkadi. Capital of the new municipality is Rethymno. Geography and history Pigi is located 9 km east of the city of Rethymno, on the road towards Arkadi, at an altitude of 60 meters, 1 km from Adele village. It is situated in the heart of a fertile and relatively smooth area, which in older times it was called Aryan. It is noteworthy that the English traveller Robert Pashley was the one who first wrote about the origin of the name of the village, 170 years ago. The relevant note is the two-volume book of this great traveller, printed in London in 1837.
