Regions Of Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan is divided into 12 regions (''viloyatlar'', singularwilayah, viloyat, ''viloyati'' in compound, e.g. Toshkent ''viloyati''), 1 autonomous republic (''respublika'', ''respublikasi'' in compound, e.g. Qaraqalpaqstan Avtonom ''Respublikasi''), and 1 independent city (''shahar'' or ''shahri'' in compounds, e.g. Toshkent ''shahri''). List Names are given below in the Uzbek language, although numerous variations of the transliterations of each name exist. The regions in turn are divided into districts of Uzbekistan, 175 districts (''tumanlar'', singular ''tuman''). Districts Of Uzbekistan
The Regions of Uzbekistan, regions (viloyat) of Uzbekistan are divided into 175 districts (''tuman''). The districts are listed by regions, in the general direction from the west to the east. Karakalpakstan Taxiatosh District was created in 2017 from part of Xoʻjayli District. Boʻzatov District was created in September 2019 from parts of the Kegeyli District and the Chimboy District. Samarkand
Samarkand ( ; Uzbek language, Uzbek and Tajik language, Tajik: Самарқанд / Samarqand, ) is a city in southeastern Uzbekistan and among the List of oldest continuously inhabited cities, oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia. Samarkand is the capital of the Samarkand Region and a district-level city, that includes the urban-type settlements Kimyogarlar, Farxod, Farhod and Xishrav, Khishrav. Qarshi
Qarshi ( ; ) is a city in southern Uzbekistan. It is the capital of Qashqadaryo Region. Administratively, Qarshi is a district-level city, that includes the urban-type settlement Qashqadaryo. It has a population of 278,300 (2021 estimate). It is about 520 km south-southwest of Tashkent, and about 335 km north of Uzbekistan's border with Afghanistan. It is located at latitude 38° 51' 48N; longitude 65° 47' 52E at an altitude of 374 meters. The city is important in natural gas production, but Qarshi is also famous for its production of woven flat carpets. Qashqadaryo Region
Qashqadaryo Region is one of the regions of Uzbekistan, located in the south-eastern part of the country in the basin of the river Qashqadaryo (river), Qashqadaryo and on the western slopes of the Pamir-Alay mountains. It borders with Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Samarqand Region, Bukhara Region and Surxondaryo Region. It covers an area of 28,570 km2. The population is an estimated 3,408,345 (2022), with 57% living in rural areas. The regional capital is Qarshi (278,300 inhabitants). Navoiy
Navoiy ( ; ) is a city and the capital of Navoiy Region in the central part of Uzbekistan. Administratively, it is a district-level city, that includes the urban-type settlement Tinchlik, Navoiy, Tinchlik. The city is named after Alisher Navoiy. As of 2024, its population was 161,300 inhabitants. History The city was founded in 1958, near the "Old city" originally known as Karmana under the Emirate of Bukhara, under the name of the great poet and statesman Alisher Navoiy, who wrote in Persian language, Persian and Chagatai language, Chaghatai at the court of Emir Husein Boykara (or Husayn Bayqarah, Husayn Bayqaro) in Herat. Namangan
Namangan is a district-level city in eastern Uzbekistan. It is the administrative, economic, and cultural center of Namangan Region. Namangan is located in the northern edge of the Fergana Valley, less than 30 km from the Kyrgyzstan border. The city is served by Namangan Airport. Namangan has been an important craft and trade center in the Fergana Valley since the 17th century. Many factories were built in the city during Soviet Union, Soviet times. During Eastern Front (World War II), World War II, industrial production in Namangan increased fivefold compared with that of the 1920s. Namangan Region (/Наманган вилояти, نمنگن ولايتى; , ''Namanganskaya oblast'') is one of the regions of Uzbekistan, located in the southern part of the Fergana Valley in far eastern part of the country. It is on the right bank of Syr Darya River and borders with Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Tashkent Region, Fergana Region, and Andijan Region. It covers an area of 7,440 km2. The population is estimated to be 2,931,056 (2022), with 35% of the population living in rural areas. The great river Syrdarya, the main waterway in Central Asia, starts in the territory of Namangan. Jizzakh Region
Jizzakh Region is one of the regions of Uzbekistan. It is located in the center/east of the country. It borders Tajikistan to the south and south-east, Samarqand Region to the west, Navoiy Region to the north-west, Kazakhstan to the north, and Sirdaryo Region to the east. It covers an area of 21,210 km2. The population is 1,443,408 (2024 estimate) with 53% living in rural areas. The regional capital is Jizzakh (pop. 212,689, 2024). Fergana
Fergana ( uz-Latn-Cyrl, Fargʻona, Фарғона, ), () or Ferghana, also Farghana is a district-level city and the capital of Fergana Region in eastern Uzbekistan. Fergana is about 320 km east of Tashkent, about 75 km southwest of Andijan, and less than 20 km from the Kyrgyzstan border. The modern city was founded in 1876. History Fergana first appears in written records in the 5th-century. However, archeological evidence demonstrates that the city had been populated since the Chalcolithic period. Like many other Central Asian places in the sixth and seventh-centuries, Fergana was ruled by the Western Turkic Khaganate.
