Political Parties In The Solomon Islands
This article lists political parties in Solomon Islands. Solomon Islands have a multi-party system with numerous political parties. Political culture In most elections, no one party has won an absolute majority of seats and so usually parties must work with each other to form coalition governments. The one exception is the 1989 election, when the People's Alliance Party (PAP) led by Solomon Mamaloni did win an absolute majority. However, in late 1990, Mamaloni broke away from the PAP and continued ruling in a coalition government until the 1993 election. Many parties are established immediately prior to an election and most are very short-lived. Some will achieve no parliamentary representation and dissolve within a year. Others will achieve parliamentary representation but, having served their purpose, are then discarded. Solomon Islands, also known simply as the Solomons,John Prados, ''Islands of Destiny'', Dutton Caliber, 2012, p,20 and passim is an island country consisting of six major islands and over 1000 smaller islands in Melanesia, part of Oceania, to the northeast of Australia. Twelve Pillars To Peace And Prosperity Party
The Twelve Pillars to Peace and Prosperity Party (TP4) was a feminist political party in Solomon Islands. People's Progressive Party (Solomon Islands)
The People's Progressive Party (PPP) was a political party in the Solomon Islands. History The PPP was established in February 1974. It was initially led by Solomon Mamaloni and was estimated to have around six members of the Governing Council. Later in the year, an election was held for the first Chief Minister. Solomon Islands Social Credit Party
The Solomon Islands Social Credit Party ("Socreds") was a political party in the Solomon Islands that espoused social credit theories of monetary reform. It opposed foreign interference in the economy of the country. It was led by Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, previously leader of the People's Progressive Party and the former Member of Parliament for East Choiseul. Sogavare launched the party in July 2005, backed by Filipino businessman Ramon Quitales. Other prominent party members included Clay Forau Soalaoi. It was a member of a four-party coalition, the Solomon Islands Alliance for Change, which included the National Party, Solomon Islands Liberal Party, and the Solomon Islands Party for Rural Advancement, and groups of independents from Honiara, Malaita and Guadalcanal. Peoples Liberal Democratic Party Of Solomon Islands
The term "the people" refers to the public or common mass of people of a polity. As such it is a concept of human rights law, international law as well as constitutional law, particularly used for claims of popular sovereignty. In contrast, a people is any plurality of persons considered as a whole. Used in politics and law, the term "a people" refers to the collective or community of an ethnic group or nation. Umi For Change Party
The Umi for Change Party (U4C) is a political party in the Solomon Islands. The party was founded in 2022 by Premier of Malaita Province Daniel Suidani. History Suidani, a vocal critic of the Sogavare government's switch of diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China and its expansion of ties with the latter, was ousted as premier in 2023 after losing a no-confidence vote, allegedly due to his opposition to the switch. Suidani explained that U4C is a successor to the Malaita Alliance for Rural Advancement government, which he led as premier of Malaita. The Political Parties Commission approved U4C's registration on 9 January 2024; the party subsequently launched a manifesto. 2024 Solomon Islands General Election
General elections were held in Solomon Islands on 17 April 2024 to determine the composition of the 12th Parliament. Initially planned for 2023, parliament voted in 2022 to delay the elections. Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare claimed the country could not afford to have an election in the same year the Solomon Islands were hosting the Pacific Games. The opposition condemned the delay and accused Sogavare of a power grab. A major campaign issue included the country's ties with China; however, domestic issues were a primary concern amongst many voters, including the cost of living, the national debt and medicine shortages.
