Marsaskala
Marsaskala, sometimes written as Marsascala is a seaside town in the Southern Region, Malta, Southern Region of Malta. Originally a fishing village, it has grown into a tourist destination and a permanent hometown for an ever-growing population. The parish church, built in 1953, is dedicated to Saint Anne and Marsaskala's feast is celebrated at the end of July. Name and etymology The name of the town is also written as Marsascala in old ortography, and often abbreviated as M'Skala. It is a composite name derived from Arabic. ''Marsa'' is the common word for harbour (also found in Marsa, Malta, Marsa, Marsaxlokk, Marsamxett). ''Skala'' is of harder interpretation, most likely derived from ''Sqalli'' (Sicilian), possibly with reference to a community of fishermen from the island, which is only away from Malta. Mario Calleja
Mario Calleja (born 6 September 1957) is a Maltese politician from the Labour Party. He has served as mayor of Marsaskala since 2006. Biography Early life Calleja attended Tarxien primary school and the Savio College church school in Dingli. He worked in tourism for four years and then moved to the United Kingdom for work. Police and hospitality career Calleja returned to Malta from the UK in February 1979 and joined the Malta Police Force, serving as a constable, a sergeant, and from 1987 as inspector. He left as criminal prosecutor in 1992. After leaving the police, between 1992 and 1996 Calleja worked for four years as assistant general manager of Qawra Palace Hotel. Calleja also worked as private investigator for insurance brokers, and opened a private security company. He remained a member of the Police Academy Board and taught courses on local government. Saint Anne
According to apocrypha, as well as Christianity, Christian and Islamic tradition, Saint Anne was the mother of Mary, mother of Jesus, Mary, the wife of Joachim and the maternal grandmother of Jesus. St Thomas Bay, Malta
St Thomas' Bay () is a bay in southeastern Malta, located in the limits of the seaside town of Marsaskala, Marsascala. About The bay takes its name from an ancient medieval chapel dedicated to Thomas the Apostle, St Thomas the Apostle. The exact location of the chapel cannot be ascertained, however, its location is linked to a shrine to St Thomas on the main road to Żejtun. Historically, the bay formed part of the nearby town of Żejtun, which lies immediately uphill of the inlet. The bay and Munxar point are popular with residents of Żejtun and other inland villages for swimming, hunting and bird-trapping. Some historians contend that St Thomas' Bay marks the true landfall of Paul the Apostle following his shipwreck on Malta.
