Birch Evans "Evan" Bayh III ( ; born December 26, 1955) is an American politician who served as the List of governors of Indiana, 46th governor of Indiana from 1989 to 1997 and as a United States Senate, United States senator representing Indiana from 1999 to 2011. A member of the Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party, he served on the President's Intelligence Advisory Board under President Joe Biden. Bayh is the son of Senator Birch Bayh and the grandson of basketball coach Birch Bayh (coach), Birch Bayh. He was first elected to public office as the Secretary of State of Indiana in 1986. The 2010 United States Senate election in Indiana took place on November 2, 2010, alongside 33 other elections to the United States Senate in other states and elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections to fill Indiana's class III United States Senate seat. Incumbent Democratic Senator Evan Bayh decided in February 2010 to retire instead of seeking a third term shortly after Dan Coats announced his candidacy. Birch Evans Bayh Sr. (September 29, 1893 – August 26, 1971) was an American basketball and baseball coach. He was the head basketball coach at Indiana State University from 1918 to 1923. During this time, he also served as the head baseball coach, athletic director and professor of physical education. He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Indiana Intercollegiate Conference; additionally, he served as the first secretary-treasurer of that organization.
