Edwards Family
The Edwards family of Chile is of Welsh people, Welsh origin. They became financially and politically influential during the 19th century. They have played and still play a significant role in Chilean politics, especially as owners of its most influential newspaper chain, El Mercurio, El Mercurio S.A.P. Under the supervision of Agustín Edwards Eastman, El Mercurio played an important role in the propaganda campaign to influence public opinion against Salvador Allende and in favor of the military coup that brought Augusto Pinochet to power. Chile
Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a country in western South America. Joaquín Edwards Bello
Joaquín Edwards Bello (; 10 May 1887–19 February 19 1968) was a Chilean writer and journalist of British descent. Life Joaquín Edwards Bello was born on the 10 May 1887, in Valparaíso to Ana Luisa Bello Rozas and Joaquín Edwards Garriga. Edwards studied at The Mackay School and later at the . To complete his education, his family decided in 1904 to send him to Europe. Edwards' first novel, ''El inútil'' (''The Useless One'' would be the translation), generated such reactions in Santiago that he emigrated to Brazil for some time. History Of Chile
The territory of Chile has been populated since at least 3000 BC. By the 16th century, Spanish invaders began to raid the region of present-day Chile, and the territory was a colony from 1540 to 1818, when it gained Chilean War of Independence, independence from Spain. The country's economic development was successively marked by the export of first agricultural produce, then sodium nitrate, saltpeter and later copper. The wealth of raw materials led to an economic upturn, but also led to dependency, and even wars with neighboring states. Sebastián Edwards
Sebastián Edwards (born 16 August 1953, Santiago, Chile) is a Chilean-American economist who has served as the Henry Ford II Distinguished Professor of International Economics at the UCLA Anderson School of Management since 2003. Early life and career Sebastián Edwards was born in Santiago in 1953, into the Edwards family. He received a licentiate in economics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in 1975, and a PhD in economics from the University of Chicago in 1981. He joined the faculty of the UCLA Anderson School of Management as an assistant professor in 1981, becoming an associate professor in 1985, a full professor in 1988, and a Distinguished Professor in 2003. Cervantes Prize
The Miguel de Cervantes Prize () is awarded annually to honour the lifetime achievement of an outstanding writer in the Spanish language. The ''Encyclopædia Britannica'' calls it "most prestigious and remunerative award given for Spanish-language literature". Jorge Edwards
Jorge Edwards Valdés (29 June 1931 – 17 March 2023) was a Chilean novelist, journalist and diplomat. He was the Chilean ambassador to France during the first Sebastián Piñera presidency. Life and career Edwards attended law school at the Universidad de Chile. During the presidency of Salvador Allende, Edwards reopened the Chilean embassy in Havana,Cuba, but only three months later, he decided to leave the island. From this episode he wrote what is perhaps his most famous work, ''Persona non grata'' (1971), which made him world famous, in which he criticized the Cuban government.
