Cutty Sark DLR Station
Cutty Sark for Maritime Greenwich is a light metro station on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) in Greenwich, south-east London, so named for its proximity to the '' Cutty Sark'' in the Maritime Greenwich district. It is the most central of the Greenwich DLR stations, being situated in Greenwich town centre. The station was designed, built and maintained by a private contractor from opening in 1999 to 2021, with the reliability of escalators at the station criticised by passengers. From June 2025, the station is temporarily closed for 10 months for all escalators in the station to be replaced. Selective Door Operation
Selective door operation (SDO), also known as selective door opening, is a mechanism employed primarily on trains (although buses with multiple doors also generally have this feature) that allows the driver or conductor/guard to open the doors of a train separately. Selective Door Operation enables trains to call at a station where the platform is shorter than the train. Some doors can be prevented from opening to ensure that passengers do not disembark from any carriages not standing at the platform. The term Selective Door Operation is used mainly in the United Kingdom; some train operating companies used the term ‘Door De-Select’. Island Gardens DLR Station
Island Gardens is a Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station next to Island Gardens on the Isle of Dogs, East London. It is just north of the River Thames and is close to the southern tip of the Isle of Dogs and the River Thames. A tunnel boring machine (TBM), also known as a "mole" or a "worm", is a machine used to excavate tunnels. TBMs are an alternative to drilling and blasting methods and "hand mining", allowing more rapid excavation through hard rock, wet or dry soil, or sand (although each requires specialized TBM technologies). Station Box
A station box is a term in the construction industry: It describes a box-like underground structure for a transportation system, for example a metro or tube station. Station boxes are built in two methods – "top-down" or "bottom-up". In the "bottom-up" method, a chamber as large as the station structure is dug into the ground into which the station is built. Poured concrete or pre-cast panels are then used to form the various levels and internal structures, similar to the construction of the underground basements of high rise buildings. When the construction is complete, this ''station box'' is covered again up to the street level. In the "top-down" method, a depth is excavated, a concrete slab is laid, and then excavation continues downwards to the base of the ''station box''.
