Culberson County, Texas
Culberson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 2,188. The county seat is Van Horn. Culberson County was founded in 1911 and organized the next year. It is named for David B. Culberson, a lawyer and Confederate soldier in the American Civil War. Culberson County is primarily in the Central Time Zone, but northwestern Culberson County, including Guadalupe Mountains National Park, is in the Mountain Time Zone, making it one of only a few U.S. counties officially split into two time zones. It is one of the nine counties that comprise the Trans-Pecos region of West Texas. Culberson is an unincorporated community in Cherokee County, North Carolina, United States. Culberson is located on North Carolina Highway 60 near the Georgia state line, southwest of Murphy. Culberson has a post office with ZIP code 28903. Culberson is also home to a store, a few churches, a flea market, a local winery, several family-owned businesses, and a gas station on the NC/GA state line. History Culberson once had a railroad depot and a train that ran from Atlanta to Murphy. The railroad company also operated a hotel in Culberson in the early 1900s. Charles Allen Culberson (June 10, 1855March 19, 1925) was an American political figure and Democrat who served as the 21st Governor of Texas from 1895 to 1899, and as a United States senator from Texas from 1899 to 1923. Early life and education Culberson was born to Democratic politician David Browning Culberson and Eugenia Culberson and on June 10, 1855 in Dadeville, Alabama. Culberson's family moved to Texas in 1856, settling first in Gilmer and later in Jefferson. Culberson attended Virginia Military Institute, graduating in 1874, and subsequently studied law at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville in 1876 and 1877. In 1877 he was admitted to the bar in Daingerfield, Texas, and commenced practice in Jefferson, later moving to Dallas in 1887. The San Francisco Giants drafted Culberson in the first round in the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. He played as an outfielder in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1943 to 1948 for the Boston Red Sox and the Washington Senators. Listed at and , he both batted and threw right-handed. Baseball career Culberson's first year in professional baseball was 1940, when he played for the Kannapolis Towelers of the Class D North Carolina State League.
