Corsicana, Texas
Corsicana is a city in and the county seat of Navarro County, Texas, United States. It is located on Interstate 45, 50 miles southeast of Dallas, Texas, Dallas. Its population was 25,109 at the 2020 census. Corsicana is considered an important agribusiness center. History Founded in 1848, Corsicana was named by José Antonio Navarro after the Mediterranean island of Corsica, the birthplace of his father. He had died when Navarro and his many siblings were young. The first school opened shortly afterwards in 1849. Women's groups have had a strong role throughout the history of the city. They established the Corsicana Female Literary Institute, a school that operated from 1857 through 1870. The first public library in Corsicana opened in 1901 by effort of the women's clubs of the city. Artesian Well
An artesian well is a well that brings groundwater to the surface without pumping because it is under pressure within a body of rock or sediment known as an aquifer. When trapped water in an aquifer is surrounded by layers of Permeability (earth sciences), impermeable rock or clay, which apply positive pressure to the water, it is known as an artesian aquifer. George Taylor Jester
George Taylor Jester (August 23, 1847 – July 19, 1922) was an American businessman and politician who served as the 19th lieutenant governor of Texas from 1895 to 1899. Biography He was born in Macoupin County, Illinois to Levi and Diadema Jester, and had several siblings. After their father died in 1851, their mother moved the family to Navarro County, Texas, where she joined her father. After trying several professions including merchandising, Jester founded what would become the Corsicana National Bank with two of his brothers. In 1890, he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives and served a term. He was elected in 1892 to the Texas Senate. After serving two terms as Lieutenant Governor (as limited by the state constitution), Jester returned to Corsicana. He died there in 1922. Jester married and had a family. José Antonio Navarro
José Antonio Navarro (February 27, 1795 – January 13, 1871) was a Texas statesman, revolutionary, rancher, and merchant. The son of Ángel Navarro and Josefa María Ruiz y Peña, he was born into a distinguished noble family at San Antonio de Béxar in the Viceroyalty of New Spain (now the American city of San Antonio, Texas).
