Core Lock
Core lock is a type of turbine engine failure that can occur during flight. When an engine is shut down in the air, some components cool faster than others due to the engine's design. Because materials expand and contract at different rates as temperatures change, this uneven cooling can cause parts of the engine to seize. If the dimensional changes are severe enough, critical components may become jammed, reducing or completely preventing rotation. Core lock makes it difficult for pilots to perform either a windmill restart or an APU-assisted engine restart. Once the engine is allowed to cool uniformly, the components gradually return to their normal dimensions, resolving the core lock condition. Turbine Engine Failure
A turbine engine failure occurs when a gas turbine engine unexpectedly stops producing power due to a malfunction other than fuel exhaustion. It often applies for aircraft, but other turbine engines can also fail, such as ground-based turbines used in power plants or combined diesel and gas vessels and vehicles. Reliability Turbine engines in use on today's turbine-powered aircraft are very reliable. Engines operate efficiently with regularly scheduled inspections and maintenance. An auxiliary power unit (APU) is a device on a vehicle that provides energy for functions other than propulsion. They are commonly found on large aircraft and naval ships as well as some large land vehicles. Aircraft APUs generally produce 115 V AC voltage at 400 Hz (rather than 50/60 Hz in mains supply), to run the electrical systems of the aircraft; others can produce 28 V DC voltage. APUs can provide power through single or three-phase systems. A jet fuel starter (JFS) is a similar device to an APU but directly linked to the main engine and started by an onboard compressed air bottle. Pinnacle Airlines Flight 3701
On October 14, 2004, Pinnacle Airlines Flight 3701 crashed near Jefferson City, Missouri while flying from Little Rock National Airport to Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport. The two pilots, the only occupants, were killed. Federal investigators determined the crash was due to the pilots' unprofessional behavior and disregard for training and procedures. Aircraft and crew Pinnacle Airlines Flight 3701, operating under the Northwest Airlink banner, was a repositioning flight of an empty 50-seat Bombardier CRJ200 (aircraft registration ).
