Convention Of The Left
The Convention of the Left (CL) is an annual conference of British left, socialist, progressive and green parties and organisations, first held in Manchester in September 2008. The format of the conference was that it 'shadowed' the Labour Party's 2008 Annual Conference, also being held in the city. A 'recall' event was held in the city in January 2009. Aims and values The 'Statement of Intent' for the Convention was that it aimed to "explicitly challenge Labour's programme of warmongering, neoliberal privatisation and failure to tackle environmental destruction." British Left
The British left is a range of political parties and movements in the United Kingdom. These can take the position of either centre-left, left-wing, or far-left. The largest political party associated with the British Left is the Labour Party, which is also the biggest political party in the UK by membership levels, with 415,000 members as of July 2022. Labour has 199 seats in the House of Commons (not including two MPs elected as Labour who as of 2021 have their whip withdrawn), and has been the Official Opposition since May 2010. The current Leader of the Labour Party is Keir Starmer, who was first elected on 4 April 2020. The second largest party on the British left, by membership, is the centre-left Scottish National Party (SNP), which has over 125,000 members despite only being active in Scotland. Gregor Gall
Gregor Gall (born 1967) is a British left-wing academic and writer, who has taught at several British universities. Career He was professor of industrial relations at the University of Bradford and before then professors of industrial relations at the University of Stirling and the University of Hertfordshire. He is now an affiliate research associate in the School of Law and the School of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Glasgow, a visiting professor at the University of Leeds and an honorary professor at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Communist Students (Autonomous)
Communist Students is a Marxist student group, autonomous from but politically close to the Communist Party of Great Britain (Provisional Central Committee). It was launched at a founding conference in December 2006, with the adoption of a constitution and programme, and election of executive members. At its 2010 conference members of Communist Students voted overwhelmingly to change its constitution and declared itself an autonomous organisation. As well as single issue campaigns (such as Hands Off the People of Iran and Stop The War Coalition), Communist Students organises within other leftist student and youth groups, including the Labour Representation Committee's youth section, the Socialist Youth Network, and the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts. Weekly Worker
The ''Weekly Worker'' is a newspaper published by the Communist Party of Great Britain (Provisional Central Committee) (CPGB-PCC). The paper is known on the left for its polemical articles, and for its close attention to Marxist theory and the politics of other Marxist groups. It claims a weekly online readership averaging over 20,000, Weekly Worker simultaneously also distributes 500 physical copies a week. Outlook The CPGB-PCC's declared intention is to emulate ''Iskra'' in providing Marxist analysis of politics and organisation to an initial vanguard of the working class. The ''Weekly Worker'' is integral to the CPGB-PCC's identity, given that the party, probably dialectically, does not consider itself to be a Marxist party. Respect – The Unity Coalition
The Respect Party was a left-wing to far-left, socialist political party active in the United Kingdom between 2004 and 2016. At the height of its success in 2007, the party had one Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons and nineteen councillors in local government. The Respect Party was established in London by Salma Yaqoob and George Monbiot in 2004. Arising in the aftermath of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, it grew out of the Stop the War Coalition and from the start revolved largely around opposition to the United Kingdom's role in the Iraq War. Uniting a range of leftist and anti-war groups, it was unofficially allied to the Muslim Association of Britain (MAB) and the Socialist Workers Party (SWP), a far-left, Marxist group. Socialist Workers Party (Britain)
The Socialist Workers Party (SWP) is a far-left political party in the United Kingdom. Founded as the Socialist Review Group by supporters of Tony Cliff in 1950, it became the International Socialists in 1962 and the SWP in 1977. The party considers itself to be Trotskyist. Cliff and his followers criticised the Soviet Union and its satellites, calling them state capitalist rather than socialist countries. The SWP has founded several fronts through which they have sought to coordinate and influence leftist action, such as the Anti-Nazi League in the late 1970s. It also formed an alliance with George Galloway and Respect, the dissolution of which in 2007 caused an internal crisis in the SWP. Respect Renewal
Respect Renewal was a faction that existed during the 2007-8 split within Respect – The Unity Coalition, a UK political party. Respect Renewal was led by Linda Smith, the National Chair, Leader and Nominating Officer of Respect, and was formed in November 2007. Its supporters included George Galloway, Ken Loach, Victoria Brittain, Salma Yaqoob and Nick Wrack. History In September 2007, Galloway wrote a letter to Respect's national council members saying that the party was "too disorganised" and "faced oblivion" unless it reformed its internal party management.
