The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces () is the second-in-command of the Egyptian Armed Forces, following the Ministry of Defense (Egypt), Minister of Defense and the President of Egypt, President. The Chief of the General Staff typically holds the second-highest military rank in the Armed Forces. The commanders of the Egyptian Navy, Navy, Egyptian Air Force, Air Force and Egyptian Air Defense Forces, Air Defense Forces report to the Chief of the General Staff, while the Egyptian Army, Army is under the direct command of the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces. The coat of arms of Egypt () is known as the Eagle of Saladin, Republican Eagle, National Emblem of Egypt or Egyptian Golden Eagle, is a heraldic golden eagle, facing the viewer's left (Dexter and sinister, dexter). Ahmad Ismail Ali
Field Marshal Ahmad Ismail Ali (; 14 October 1917 – 25 December 1974) was an Egyptian senior military officer who was Egypt's minister of war during the Yom Kippur War of 1973. He is best known for his planning of the attack across the Suez Canal, code-named Operation Badr. He graduated from the Military Academy in 1938 and was a colleague of both the late President Anwar Sadat and President Gamal Abdel Nasser in the Academy. After graduating with the rank of second lieutenant, he joined the infantry and served in the Second World War and fought in the First Arab-Israeli War, the 1956 Suez Crisis and the Six-Day War. In 1969, he became the Chief of Staff of the Egyptian Armed Forces and then was dismissed by Nasser because of the famous Zafarana incident. Lieutenant General Sami Hafez Anan (, ; born 27 February 1948) is a retired Egyptian military officer. He was the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces from 2005 until August 2012 when his retirement was announced by President Mohamed Morsi. Magdy Hatata (born 1941) is an Egyptian military officer who held various positions during the Presidency of Hosni Mubarak. Biography Hatata was born in 1941. He received a master of arts degree in military science and a fellowship of the Nasser Military Academy’s Higher War College. He served as the commander of the second field army. He also headed the Republican Guard being the fifth commander of the guard under Mubarak. He was one of the military personnel fought against Israel in 1973. Mohammed Aly Fahmy (11 October 1920 – 11 September 1999) was an Egyptian field marshal, known as the "Father of the Egyptian Air Defense".
